The Marble Falls High School boys basketball team lost to Austin Liberal Arts and Science Academy 64-56 Dec. 10.

Only one quarter, the second, determined the outcome.

The Mustangs trailed 12-11 after the first quarter and were outscored 20-18 in the third. But the Raptors outscored Marble Falls 18-7 in the second period to build a 30-18 lead that paved the way to the outcome.

LASA featured players who could shoot from virtually any spot and could finish at the rim. Because they scored on many first shot attempts, there weren’t misses to rebounds.

“They made a lot of shots,” head coach John Berkman said. “Some of that is because they were able to get the goal. They only made four 3-pointers. But they made 22 buckets in the paint. They made a lot of more shots than us. The buckets in the paint matter.”

Marble Falls made eleven 2-pointers and seven 3-pointers.

Senior guard Tidus Willie led the Mustangs with 24 points followed by senior forward Garen Jones with 16.

The two drove to the lane, took outside jumpers and tried to set up their teammates for shots.

Senior guard Isaiah Lazos added 5 pointes, while senior center Noah Lyon and sophomore guard Beckett Berkman each scored 4, and senior guard Jackson Trudeau had 3.

The Mustangs turn their attention to its annual tournament renamed the HTeaO Hoops Classic. Fifteen teams will make their way to the high school Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 11-13.

The teams compete in pool play for seeds then go to bracket play. Marble Falls is in a pool with Socorro, which they play at noon, and Austin Crockett, which they meet at 6 p.m. both on Thursday.

The coach said he wants to see one aspect from his team.

“Continued growth,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of areas to grow in.We got several young players as well, but it still needs to continue to grow. Every good team does. We’ve just got to understand a few things about consistency, doing things right every time, every possession.”
