The Burnet Consolidated Independent School District Athletic Department began its summer strength-and-conditioning program June 2 after taking last week off.

Bulldogs in grades 9-12 work out from 8-9:30 a.m. and seventh- and eighth-graders go from 9:30-11 a.m.

While football head coach Ben Speer was happy that he, his staff and athletes had some time away from the facility, he said he was looking forward to starting again.

“The week off is good,” he said. “And it’s good to get back to your summer routine.”

While continuing to get stronger, faster and more agile is at the top of the to-do list, Speer said he’s curious to get answers to other questions.

Among them is discovering who will lead the Bulldogs.

“Who’s going to step up and lead?” he said. “Who’s going to be accountable with who’s here and not? I have two seniors who are responsible for communicating with other seniors and they’re responsible for communicating with me.”

The Bulldogs have broken into 10 groups. Each group has one athlete who is supposed to know where the members of his group are at if they’re not in attendance. Those individual group leaders then talk to the two seniors, who communicate with Speer.

“I trust them, and it gives them the opportunity to lead and forces (others) into offseason workouts,” he said.

He noted many of the Bulldogs have summer jobs and some are performing hard, physical labor in construction. So he knows all the lifting will continue to help the Bulldogs. And he still wants to see them all attend the summer sessions.

“Some of the guys are working hard jobs,” the coach said. “It’s very demanding jobs, strength wise. And it’s still important for them to be here during the summer. Your teammates need to see you and you see them. You trust each other. You don’t earn that trust if you’re not here.”
