Both Marble Falls High School girls soccer teams each won their only match July 10 on the first night of the Burnet Summer League.
Games are played at the Burnet Middle School stadium beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursdays. The format is 7 versus 7 played on one side of the 50-yard line, which allows two matches to be played at the same time.
Marble Falls Purple, which consists of a lot of “older” Lady Mustangs, defeated Burnet 4-3 thanks to scoring a goal in the final minute of play. Marble Falls Gold, which consists of junior varsity players and incoming freshmen, beat Lampasas 2-1.
Head coach Marisa Miller, who is entering her second year at the helm and is not allowed to coach Marble Falls right now by rules of the University Interscholastic League, noted each Marble Falls team has 13 players.
“(The purple team) did well,” she said. “They had a couple of new faces coming into the group. As coaches, we were interested in seeing how they worked together. They scored a goal in the last seconds – they were doing well. We were interested in seeing who steps up and takes that (leadership) role, how they passed, how they possessed.”
Though the purple team consisted of mostly veterans, Miller said the roster also will have some newcomers.
“We have a few players who will be new to the varsity,” she said. “We want to see how they’re integrated in. I was very pleased to see how they were integrated in. They integrated well as a group. It was good to see them fit right in.”
The gold team also played well, the coach said.
“You have a lot of returning JV players with a lot of heart and skill,” Miller said. “And they’re playing with freshmen, who also have a lot of skills. It’s different stuff we’ve been working on as a program. We’ll see them develop those ideas and getting more comfortable playing on the field with each other.”
Gold team members were equally eager to get on the pitch and show their skills, too, the coach said.
“They definitely came out to play,” she said. “Everyone had a positive attitude, everyone was working hard and communicating on the field. Us coaches standing by can see who’s trying to step up and mesh together.”
Many of the Lady Mustangs have been attending Forge ’25, the athletic department’s summer strength and conditioning program, and then attending sport-specific skills sessions afterward. Miller said coaches could see much of that work on display during summer league.
“We’ve been working on shooting from a few yards,” she said. “They had some very well placed balls. You can tell the kids are playing so much together. They came in and were ready. They have very positive attitudes about the whole league. It was a good start for the season. They’re ready to go.”
Marble Falls Gold will play Burnet at 5 p.m. and Marble Falls Purple will face Lampasas at 5:40 p.m.
“As coaches, watching gets us excited for the coming season,” Miller said. “The girls are excited and competing.”
