The Marble Falls High School tennis team stomped Cameron Yoe 18-1 in matches that took two days to finish because of thunderstorms and lightning.
On the first day, which began at 4:10 p.m. Aug. 21, the Mustangs took a dominant 7-0 lead thanks to sweeping the three boys and girls doubles and mixed doubles matches. By 5:30 p.m. four singles matches had started already. Lightning was detected and sent players indoors. Coaches realized by the time the storm passed through and players could return to the courts for warm-ups, they’d resume at 7:30 p.m.
So they chose to meet back up the next day to finish beginning at 4:10 p.m. By 5:50 p.m., Marble Falls had earned the necessary win total to take the head-to-head win.
“We went out Thursday and dominated Yoe,” Marble Falls head coach Samuel Whitley said. “On Friday, every single player who came off the court said they didn’t play well. On Thursday, we brought intensity. We wanted to dominate, which we did. Our singles matches normally take an hour. We still won and didn’t dominate like we did Thursday.”
Yoe lost their top male and female players to knee injuries. One is expected back in the spring, while the other is still examining options with family and doctors.
Marble Falls will welcome Salado at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, in a battle of undefeated District 25-4A teams.
“Salado is a good team, a much improved team,” Whitley said. “It’ll be a much better matchup. We want to say focused on the ball coming across the net. We have to stay focused.”
After Marble Falls won, Payton Glaser was with his teammates and noted that perhaps Cameron “wasn’t as good” or “maybe we’re a little better than what we used to be.”
Whitley grinned when he heard that.
“We put in the time, the effort, the sweat,” he said. “We are a little better than we used to be. It’s about the next ball. Play the match in front of you. When the match is over with, we’ll celebrate when we’ve won.”
