The Marble Falls High School football team overpowered Austin Crockett 49-0 in the season opener for both teams.
The Mustangs (1-0) led 43-0 at the half thanks a brilliant and flawless performance.
“Our kids did a good job coming out early and on finishing drives,” head coach Keri Timmerman said.
Leading the charge was senior running back Joaquin Aguilar, who had touchdown runs of 3, 77, 35 and 4 yards. In all he had about 170 yards on 10 rushes in the first half, all unofficial. A big part of the success is because of offensive linemen Logan Chapa, Madden Hernandez and David Molina, who are juniors, and Tyler Leverett and Raul Moran, who are seniors.
“We have to make some adjustments up front to be a little more consistent with the paths that are heavy,” the coach said. “I think we did a good job of doing that early. I think we left splints leak through as we got a little tired, but it helps that we don’t have (the same players) going defensive line, offensive line, defensive line, offensive line and then just get gassed in the fourth. So it cleans things up for us. That’s the goal, but our kids are getting close.”
Sophomore quarterback Crawford Mattox found sophomore receiver Kase Woodul on a dazzling 28-yard touchdown pass on a go route. Mattox threw to a spot, allowing Woodul time to get under it as the receiver beat the defensive backs on the play.
Timmerman said that play illustrates plenty about the direction of the passing attack.
“(Mattox) understands what we’re trying to do with our offense and I think our receivers are starting to gain that,” he said. “We’re still learning to fit in that way. And that’s one of the things that’s going to happen is we’ve got to find a way to fit from a team that hadn’t thrown the ball for five years to what does it feel like a catch a ball. They want to do it, so they’re trying – we just gotta get better at it. And a lot of it comes down to just the eyes being right and finishing.”
Meanwhile, the Marble Falls defense allowed only one Cougar first down in the first half — a 10-yard pass on the last play . And though the Cougars had a little more success in moving the chains in the second half, they didn’t score.
“I think we do a much better job of fitting and finishing and filling,” Timmerman said. “We didn’t fall off tackles the way we have the past couple of weeks, and that’s the biggest thing you can’t do defensively. It’s contain and tackle it. We did a much better job this week of run to the football and understanding our leverage, keeping it and controlling it. Our coordinators (Ryan Craven and Austin Silva), our coaches did a really good job teaching that and fixing some things we had leaks in last week.”
Even the Mustangs special teams got in on the scoring.
The Crockett punter contended with high snaps throughout the half. One ball reached the end zone. Instead of falling on the ball, the punter threw it from the end zone and Braxton Dicken caught it for the touchdown.
The punter fell on the next high snap that went into the end zone.
While Timmerman was happy with the win, he indicated the Mustangs can still get better.”We’ve got to fix (some) things and make sure we’re ready,” he said. “Other than we just got some execution issues, I think the coaches had a good game plan after the kids for the most part executed. We gotta find an inch here and there to clean some things up. We’ve got to make sure we take care of details. “
Marble Falls welcomes Jarrell at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, for the home opener and homecoming game.
