The Marble Falls High School cross country team competed at the Tenroc Invitational hosted by Salado Sept. 11.

In the Classes 1A-4A boys division, the Mustangs finished fourth out of 18 teams, while the Lady Mustangs were 12th out of 16 teams. The boys run a 5K, while the girls run two miles.

Owen Martin paced the Mustangs by finishing sixth overall in 17 minutes and 4.01 seconds to set a new personal best. His old mark was 17:11. Graham Goggans was 13th overall in 17:13.01 to set a new season best. Logan Hargraves came in 22nd in 17:55.50 to set a new personal best. His old mark was 18:31. Joaquim Edwards came in 23rd in 17:58.01 for a new personal best and Jahir Garcia was 46ths in 18:51.02.

In the girls division, Reese Massey finished in 12:52.09 for 22nd overall. Sapana Khatri came in 42nd in 13:51.21, Savannah Hamblin was 69th in 14:30.04, Graci Nelson was 70th in 14:31.21, and Haydalye Hernandez came in 93rd in 15:18.03.

The way the course was designed allowed most of the Mustangs and every Lady Mustang to set a new season best or personal best.

“The downhill first mile helped athletes get out fast, but really it’s their training, pacing and racing maturity that made the difference,” head coach Brenda Gonzalez said. “They’re getting stronger, taking care of their bodies, staying hydrated, fueling properly and racing with a purpose. The cool weather in Salado also made for great racing conditions. They’re hitting their stride at the right time.”

Gonzalez said the course was the challenge her runners needed.

“As a spectator you could mostly see the start and the finish, but the course itself was tough,” she said. “For the 5K, the first mile was mostly downhill so it went out fast, the second mile was hilly, and the third had a variation. The two-mile was similar — downhill to start and then hills later. Overall, it was a hilly back half of the race.”

In the girls division, Salado won the meet, Burnet finished fifth, Lampasas was 10th and Georgetown Gateway was 11th. All are in District 24-4A.

“Seeing our district teams now is huge,” Gonzalez said. “It shows us where we stand, who we need to beat, and what it’s going to take to extend our season. It’s going to be a very competitive district meet on both the boys and girls sides, and that’s exciting. Overall, it was a really successful meet. We got to line up against district opponents, see big improvements, and enjoy the day as a program. It was fun to watch and even better to experience.”

In the girls junior varsity division, Burnet finished seventh out of nine teams with Salado winning the championship and Lampasas finishing fourth.

Marble Falls will competed in the the Hoka McNeil Elite Invitational at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Old Settler’s Park in Round Rock. This meet serves as a preview of the state meet course.
