The Faith Academy of Marble Falls volleyball team crushed Killeen Memorial 25-9, 25-8, 25-6 in non-district play Oct. 7.
Sophomore Ella Claiborne led the Lady Flames (22-6, 5-1) with 12 kills, four aces, a dig and five receptions, while junior Kerrington Silvers had 10 kills, a block, three digs, an assist and two receptions. Claiborne is the TAPPS Class 3A kills leader with 308.
Head coach Erin Sawyer said her team used the match to work on other plays to get ready for the rest of District 4-3A and the playoffs of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
The plays had to do with putting specific athletes in various spots all over the floor to create the open lanes for kills and defensive adjustments. The Lady Flames also worked on their timing and court chemistry.
“In a game that really matters, we’re not going to be trying to run whatever we haven’t practiced,” she said. “But in these kinds of games, we can step in and try the things we need to work on and that the other team doesn’t know. It gives us an element of surprise in how we can run those particular plays and if it works or doesn’t really work. So it’s a time for us to see. It will benefit us by running those plays in a real game against people.”
In addition, by practicing these plays, Sawyer has them on her play sheet so that if an opponent runs a particular defense, the Lady Flames know how to attack it.
“I can see what they’re doing if we’re going to do this type of run or we’re going to do this type of play,” she said. “We need to make sure we can hit, so it’s breaking down where we can hit and how we should hit and does it even work? We can try it in a different rotations or try something different or that’s a scrap. It let’s us see if it just doesn’t work for us.”
Faith will play three matches next week beginning with hosting Waco Live Oak Tuesday, Oct. 14, and then traveling to San Antonio Keystone Thursday, Oct.16, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6 p.m. Austin San Juan Diego visits Faith Saturday, Oct. 18, with the the junior varsity playing at 1 p.m. at the varsity at 2 p.m.
