The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team lost to Little River Academy 57-32 Nov. 14 in a non-district contest.

The Lady Mustangs led 10-9 with 3 minutes and 17 seconds remaining in the first period.

“Then we just had trouble with their press,” head coach Adley Canales said. “They outscored us 26-4 in the first half.”

The Bumblebees led 36-14 at the half. Canales said the Lady Mustangs regrouped.

“The girls made a conscious effort to fix the things that went wrong in the first half, and we played much better in the second half,” he said. “It was only a one-point difference in the second half. We got outscored 19 to 18 in the second half. The girls bought into the adjustments that were made at halftime and fixed them and played much better, which was great.”

He was pleased with the play of freshman Emma Martin. She scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Lady Mustangs in both categories.

The coach called this week “a big week” because of the number of games the Lady Mustangs will play, all at home.

It begins when the Lady Mustangs host Bastrop with the subvarsities playing at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, and ends with the annual Hill Country Classic Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 20-22, which is a varsity only event.

In pool play Marble Falls will play Gainesville at noon and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff at 6 p.m. Thursday then Austin St. Dominic Savio at noon Friday all in Max Copeland Gym. Bracket play begins at 3 p.m. Friday.

In all the tournament has 16 teams from across the state that are members of the University Interscholastic League and private schools, which is why teams want to play in it, Canales said.

“We have (Class) 2As coming who are perennial state contenders (Lipan),” he said. “And then there’s (Class) 6A’s Flour Bluff, Flower Mound Marcus, (Austin) Vandegriff, Lake Travis and Katy are all coming. So a bunch of different schools from a bunch of different regions all over the state, which is what we look for when we host a tournament. We don’t want a lot of local schools because we can all schedule each other, and teams that are coming want to see people from around the state. So it’s not very often that a school from down south gets to play a school from up in the panhandle, but this is a neutral site where they can meet and get that done and see different things that you don’t normally see every week.”
