The Marble Falls High School girls soccer team shut out Little River Academy 6-0 Jan. 22 in a match that was played a day earlier than scheduled to avoid the bad weather.
“I think it went great,” head coach Marisa Miller said. “We talked a lot about coming out there and making sure that we take advantage of every opportunity that we got in front of the goal. We missed quite a bit against Austin KIPP (a 4-1 win Jan. 20), so that was our goal. This game was to make everything count, and I think I can say they did that.”
The Lady Mustangs (8-0-2) got three goals from Suzena Perez Angel with two assists from Dulce Macias Garcia.
Other goals came from Alisson Ramirez on a corner kick, Jill Cole on a through ball, and Macias Garcia from 18 yards out.
The Bumblebees (11-3) earned numerous wins already this season and with District 26-4A play about to start, they may have given the Lady Mustangs what they needed in preparation for the next part of their season. Academy beat District 26-4A member Bandera 4-1 and lost to Burnet County rival Burnet 4-2
“I think (Academy) has a strong middle, and it was good for us to have to shut that down,” Miller said. “And we worked a lot on trying to stop the through balls and not getting beat on defense. And so I think we did a good job of that. We shut that down pretty quickly on their offense.”
Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs earned another shutout.
“Our defense has been working really hard in the offseason,” the coach said. “That was their seventh shutout of pre (district), and so we’ve been working a lot with them just with their formation, their shape.”
Miller has been especially happy with the way the Lady Mustangs have helped protect the goal.
“That whole back line has been doing well, very well,” she said. “They’re very coachable, taking what I say in practice and bringing it out onto the field. They ask a lot of questions, and we’ve really been trying to get everything comfortable back there. So when we get into these really strong offenses, we’ll be ready.”
Now the Lady Mustangs begin preparations for Wimberley (8-1-1) in the District 26-4A opener at home Wednesday, Jan. 28, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity to follow.
“I do think it was a good match right before Wimberly,” Miller said. “I do think that was a strong midfield that we went against.”
