The Burnet High School boys soccer team lost to Austin Northeast 6-0 March 3 in District 25-4A play.

Northeast’s (14-4-2, 10-0-1) wins against the Bulldogs and Austin LBJ March 7 makes the Raiders the district champions.

Burnet head coach Benjamin Boorman credited his players for their efforts throughout the season, pointing out many learned how to play multiple positions because some players were sidelined with injuries or illnesses.

One player who contributed no matter the position was Genesis Ceron.

“He started the game playing striker and gave me full effort and almost had a couple goals,” Boorman said. “And then what ended up happening was my starting defenseman had to come out for a short injury, and they scored 30 seconds later, because the guy who got in let the line go. That’s how soccer works.”

Once one goal was scored two others followed.

“It was dropped heads, and we tried to continue to play hard, but the goals just started to come in,” the coach said.

So he decided to move Ceron to center defense from striker.

“It really helped,” Boorman said. “He put a lot of energy back into the back line. Genesis was the Utility Player of the Year his freshman year. That was four years ago. He won Utility Player of the Year because he can play offense and defense just as well.”

Burnet will finish the soccer season this week. First is a home match against LBJ Tuesday, March 10, then the Bulldogs go the Burger Center to play Austin Travis Friday, March 13. The junior varsities play at 6 p.m. and the varsities at 7:30 p.m.

Between the two LBJ matches, the program will honor its four seniors: Julian Ramirez, Roberto Montoya Carranza, Aiden Morris and Ceron.

“I hope that we finish strong and that they realize that they are a really good brotherhood,” Boorman said. “They’re young and they’ve been together for a while. As their bodies continue to grow and as they continue to grow in the sport, it’ll only get better. I’m proud of where we’ve come as a program at Burnet and I know that these boys will continue to get better and to grow, so I’m not worried about the future.”
