The Burnet High School powerlifting program is turnings its eyes to the Class 4A state meet.
That’s because two Lady Dawgs — Sofia Cardenas and Madeline Cardenas — qualified for the meet thanks to their finishes at the Class 4A Region 2 meet recently. Both will compete at the state meet at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg Friday, March 20.
Sofia Cardenas lifted a total of 750 pounds in the 181-pound weight division where she had a 310-pound squat, a 145-pound bench press, and a 295-pound dead lift. All of these totals set new personal records.
“She put herself in a great position to capture the set in state,” head coach Zane Hicks said. “I thought she fought to capture the silver (medal) and did a good job to make sure it was secure after the squat.”
Equally impressive was Madeline Cardenas, who was second in the 220-pound weight class thanks to lifting a total of 860 pounds. She had a 345-pound squat, a 175-pound bench press, and a 340 pound dead lift. Her total in the dead lift is a new personal record.
“Which ultimately gave her the win,” Hicks said. “She was battling a lifter from Lampasas (Layne Bretey) for the entire meet. She showed great heart as she had been dealing with back pain issues the week leading up into the meet.”
The Bulldogs finished sixth overall at the regional meet March 14 led by Adam Heffington, who won the 275-pound weight class thanks to a 700-pound squat, a 455-pound bench press and a 505-pound dead lift for a total of 1,660 pounds.
Earning bronze medals was Nathan Torres, who competed in the 181-pound weight class, had a squat of 540 pounds, a bench press of 320 pounds and a dead lift of 510 pounds for a total of 1,370 pounds.
Also competing in the 181-pound weight division was Adler Goehring, who finished fourth with a 520-pound squat, a 330-pound bench press, and a 510-pound dead lift for a total of 1,365 pounds.
Thomas Butler was fourth in the 132-pound weight class thanks to a 405-pound squat, a 225-pound bench press, and a 380-pound dead lift for a total of 1,010 pounds.
William Horner was fifth in the 114-pound weight class with a 240-pound squat, a 155-pound bench press, and a 280-pound dead lift for a total of 675 pounds.
Alek Kassner was fifth in the 165-pound weight class thanks to a 470-pound squat, a 340-pound bench press, and a 435-pound dead lift for a total of 1,245 pounds.
The boys state meet is March 27 at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.
