The Marble Falls High School softball team lost to Lampasas 9-3 April 2 in District 24-4A play.
The Lady Badgers plated four runs in the first inning but the Lady Mustangs plated two in the second inning to trim the deficit to 4-2.
“They came out swinging in the first inning,” Marble Falls head coach Alex Lozoya said. “We had a good plan before going up against (Lampasas senior pitcher) Brooklyn (Farmer). They had four earned in the first inning. Our kids did a good job of responding.”
But Lampasas got the runs back in the third inning and three runs in the fifth inning. In all the Lady Badgers hit three home runs. Madison Magilke had 6 RBI off 2 homers.
“You just can’t give them opportunities to hurt you,” Lozoya said. “We left the ball (pitch) over the plate that got hit over the centerfield fence so that took them back up 6-2 and a little more momentum. Kudos to Lampasas. They scored nine on nine hits and all nine were earned.”
Marble Falls added a run in the seventh inning. Sophomore Callie Phillips had 2 RBI off 3 hits, while freshman Ady Floyd had a RBI hit. Khloe Hollingsworth went 2 for 3 at the plate.
“Ady Floyd had a good rip,” the coach said.
Farmer allowed three runs from eight hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Lozoya noted that in the second inning, Phillips was in a rundown from second to third and was called out for interference. But during the rundown, a Lady Mustang scored. Since the official ruled interference, the run was taken off the board.
“In my opinion, I thought Callie had no contact with the shortstop, Callie had no interference with the short stop’s ability to field a ball,” he said. “The official saw it differently. We got some momentum coming through that showed that in the bottom half of the inning where we got our outs to come in, and then we couldn’t scratch another run after that until the seventh.”
Lozoya wouldn’t go as far as to say his team is snake bit. Still, he noted, it’s not like his batters aren’t “putting barrels on balls.”
“Cheyenne Thompson is putting a good barrel on the ball, Jocelyn Suarez is putting a good barrel on the ball – (defenses) are just making plays on them,” he said. “We just have to continue to control what we can control, and that’s with our pitching and defense, the cliche of just trying to find a way to get off the field and go take our chances and see what we can do on offense.”
Marble Falls has three games left in the regular season beginning with a home date against Salado Tuesday, April 7, a road trip to Burnet Friday, April 10, and back at home at Scearce Softball Field against Jarrell Tuesday, April 14. The junior varsity plays at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 7 p.m.
