When Roy Kiser announced he was stepping down as the Burnet High School boys basketball head coach and that assistant coach Juston Weldon was taking over, few people were happier for the two than Zakk Revelle.

That’s because he was blessed to play for Kiser for four years as a Burnet Bulldog and played with Weldon for a year at Sul Ross University.

“I love Burnet,” said Revelle, who is the Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys basketball head coach and athletic director. “That’s always my second favorite team behind Faith Academy.”

Even before the two suited up in the same locker room for Sul Ross, they played against each other in high school. Weldon is at 2009 Wimberley High School graduate.

At Sul Ross, Weldon was the shooting guard, while Revelle, who had transferred to the university from a junior college, was the point guard.

“He could shoot it,” the Faith coach said. “It was a really fun experience.”

Weldon graduated from Sul Ross in 2013 and was the head coach of the Blanco Panthers for four years. He had averaged winning 25 games a year when a spot opened on Kiser’s staff.

“I needed a change of scenery at the time and I had known coach Kiser for many years,” he said. “His assistant job came open, and he was looking for an experienced assistant who could take over leadership of the program and carry on his legacy upon his decision to retire. The long-term sustained success of coach Kiser’s program and the disciplined and coachable kids of Burnet immediately intrigued me to join the Bulldog basketball program.”

After Weldon became the head coach, Revelle said he jokingly told him, “I knew you always wanted to wear Kelly green.”

Revelle got a good look at the Bulldogs during the Llano Summer League that ran for four weeks. It ended a couple weeks ago.

“They have great guards,” he said. “If his guards do anything, it’s shooting the ball.”

The two share some of the same philosophy about stretching the defense and reading what’s happening to get the best shot. They love giving the green light to their shooters to score.

Revelle said Burnet fans shouldn’t be surprised at the high energy Weldon wants to see on the court.

“They can shot it. They’ll get up and down and live and die with the three,” he said. “Defensively, he runs man. He’s not afraid to run zone. He’ll have really good sets he’ll run through.”

Weldon also has a number of other traits that Revelle believes will pave the way to success.

“I think he’ll do an incredible job,” he said. “He’s really funny and he’s really relatable. He’s seeing the big picture. He’s a great mentor. He does a good job of listening. He’s willing to have conversations with players and listen to the kids. I respect that.”
