Burnet cross country finishes fourth in varsity races

The Burnet High School cross country program competed at the Cedar Park Vista Ridge Invitational Aug. 22.

The Bulldogs took fourth overall with 96 points thanks to a cumulative time of 1 hour and 35.08 seconds with each runner clocking 18:56.

“We’re just deep in that area,” head coach Simon Hairston said. “We continue to showcase that we do have depth, we’re able to score points. If we continue with our performances, I feel like that is going to definitely carry over into the district meet.”

Burnet runner Clark Yanez crossed the finish line in 17 minutes and 58 seconds, while Adan Carreon was ninth in 18:24, Isaac Vega finished 18th in 18:55, Austin Moore was 27th in 19:30, Jose Flores came in 38th in 19:54, Hector Vega was 53rd in 20:08, and Christopher Hernandez came in 48th in (Burnet), 20:23.

“Clark Yanez is our sophomore runner, who had a really strong performance,” Hairston said. “And different guys really showing their abilities throughout the course of this early portion of the season. We just have guys who are stepping up and performing at a high level. The continuity is something that I believe as long as we can keep that, it’ll serve us well.”

The scary part for the Bulldogs is Hairston believes these runners will only get better.

“We had a little hiccup on the starting line, which is hard to tell you our times are actual valid times,” he said. “There’s still a lot of time left where we can see different guys.”

District 24-4A member Lampasas finished third overall in the boys varsity standings.

On the girls side, the Lady Dawgs finished fourth overall led by senior Asah Roy, who took bronze in the individual standings thanks to clocking 12:52 on the two-mile course.

“We did have some really good overall performances,” Hairston said. “It was a standout moment for (Roy), and she just has a high level of expectation for her herself and overall performance. Hopefully that’ll build some confidence in her, and our goal is to try to keep her healthy through the season so she can have a complete season. With a performance like that early on at a big meet like that, I’m very, very impressed with her going out and competing at a high level.”

Other runners are Kamila Palacios, who was 28th in 14:50, Erica Flores was 31st in 14:55, Abby Bennight came in 33rd in 14:57, and Josie McCadivs was 36th in 15:02, Brekyn Langley, who was 48th in 15:15, and Brooklyn Flores, who was 53rd in 15:23.

“Freshman Kamila Palacios stepped up and had an amazing meet. She dropped her overall time by 20 seconds.,” Hairston said. “Erica Flores, our senior, dropped her time by about 20 seconds over the previous meet at Battle for Wilco. I was really encouraged by those two performances as well.

The Burnet boys junior varsity finished 17th out of 24 teams, while the Lady Dawgs finished seventh out of 10 teams.

“I feel like our JV Girls did really well,” Hairston said. “I felt like Marigny Griffin and Savannah Griffin had a really good meet on a tough course and their overall performances is just really good. I was really encouraged by their efforts.”

He also felt good about the performances of the boys junior varsity. Gabe Castillo was 73rd in 21:37, Gatlin Gilmore finished 85th in 21:53, Matthew Resendez was 111th in 23:07, Leon Perez came in 112th in 23:07, Justin Calhoun was 129th in 23:47, and Angelo Ramirez was 154th in 28:18.

“Gabe Castillo being a freshman just had a really great meet,” Hairston said. “He’s a football player as well, so doing two sports and coming out and really performing. And improving every week. It’s really nice to see. Gatlin Gilmore had a really good race. He improved from last week and looks stronger.”

He noted this course tested the runners, both mentally and physically.

“The Vista Ridge course was a tough course for all teams,” Hairston said. “It was a tough course because a lot of it was mud.”

Overall, he likes where the runners are and believes better times are coming.

“The development of consistency as a team week in and week out I think will really serve us well as we continue to improve our times overall,” Hairston said. “Yeah, I think of the upside and some great things.

Burnet will compete in the Viking Cross Country Invitational hosted by Lago Vista Thursday, Aug. 28, staring at 7:30 a.m. with the high school girls 5K run.
