The Marble Falls High School football team will face Austin Crockett at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the Toney Burger Center.
The Mustangs are hoping to at least equal the dominance they displayed a year ago.
During the 2024 season opener Doak Timmerman, who was at quarterback, had five touchdowns en route to leading the Mustangs to a 56-0 shutout and giving his dad, head coach Keri Timmerman, his first win as the Marble Falls head coach.
By halftime Marble Falls led 29-0 and the defense allowed a total of 43 yards of total offense in four quarters.
This season the Cougars had only one scrimmage, which was Aug. 22. The Marble Falls coaching staff was in attendance.
Keri Timmerman said he wants to see the correct timing between the quarterback and the skill players and getting the ball cleanly and they are all doing the smallest tasks that matter so much in each play such as the linemen stepping in the right direction on the correct foot.
“I want to make sure we understand what we’re doing,” he said. “I want to make sure our defense is aligned pre-snap correctly. We have to build. We saw a lot of growth in the physicality.”
Marble Falls enters the contest on the heels of finishing its final scrimmage at Gatesville Aug. 21.
Timmerman said coaches “still scripted everything” so they could see the Mustangs in specific plays and personnel.
“The reality is the kids looked very comfortable,” he said. “Our kids are getting more comfortable.”
The Mustangs scored in the controlled session when senior running back Joaquin Aguilar completed an eight-play drive when he “walked in.”
The other score came from the reserves when senior quarterback Anderson Liscum found sophomore receiver Braxton Dicken on a passing touchdown.
The scrimmage reaffirmed some truths for the Mustangs. Top of the list is the starters.
“We’re pretty set on who our starters are,” Timmerman said.
Two of them are sophomore quarterback Crawford Mattox along with Aguilar.
“The reality is he’s a good quarterback, and we’re in year two in our system,” the coach said. “(The offensive line) I think as a whole, we’re more developed a little more. Every game we’re fighting together and we’re seeing growth.”
Senior offensive linemen Tyler Leverett and Raul Moran return as starters.
One of the foundational pieces of the program is that it is “building a system with the junior varsity.”
“We’re running the same concepts and we’re trying to be pretty physical,” Keri Timmerman said. “We’re carrying that over from the JV. It helps. I don’t feel like we’re starting over completely.”
He was pleased with the way the defense competed, too, pointing out the Mustangs located the ball carrier and got there in a hurry.
“I saw kids run to the ball, I saw physicality,” the coach said. “We have to work, all 11 players. We are learning in scrimmages.”
He called the scrimmages opportunities to grow. That’s why even the miscues are viewed as chances for improvement.
“We have to be aggressive to the ball, we have to be locked in to our jobs,” Keri Timmerman said. “We also saw some things to correct.”
