Burnet cross country performs well at Lampasas meet

The Burnet High School cross country program competed in the Badger Invitational hosted by Lampasas Sept. 27 in what may have been the District 24-4A preview meet.

Lampasas will host that meet Oct. 7.

The Bulldogs finished second overall and the Lady Dawgs were third overall in the varsity divisions.

Burnet had two runners finish in the top 10 of the boys varsity individual standings. They are Adan Carreon, who was third in 17 minutes and 28 seconds, and Jose Flores, who was eighth in 18:26.5. Christopher Hernandez came in 16th in 19:12.9, Russell Ramirez was 20th in 19:43.1, Hector Vega finished 25th in 19:55.7, Austin Moore was 27th in 20:09.7, and Andrew Resendez came in 28th in 20:12.5.

“Like I said before, (we need our) three, four, and five runners to have a little bit more consistency, but I’m excited,” head coach Simon Hairston said. “I really am. I think this time of year, we’re falling right where we need to fall at, and we have a good look of what we need to see competition-wise of how we’re stacking up with them.”

The Lady Dawgs were paced by Asah Roy, who won individual gold thanks to clocking 12:23 on the two-mile course. Kamila Palacios was 16th in 14:27, Erica Flores came in 17th in 14:30.7, Abby Bennight was 18th in 14:36.7, Josie McDavid finished 19th in 14:47.9, Brekyn Langley was 25th in 15:23.8, and Brooklyn Flores finished 28th in 15:39.4.

“Josie is one that’s really come on,” Hairston said. “She ran a 13:47 at (the Salado Tenroc) meet, which is her top time. And I feel like if we can develop Josie, too, as our No. 2 runner, it would be really good. If we have Erica, Josie and some of our senior girls to really have some of their breakout times, … if we can get those girls down into the 13s collectively, it would be really advantageous for us.”

Both junior varsity teams finished second in their respective divisions.

Gatlin Gilmore continues to run well in posting a top five finish in the boys race, while Gabe Castillo and Matthew Resendez finished second and forth overall.

“Gatlin Gilmore, … I said that he’s Mr. Consistent, but he’d been off a significant time,” the coach said. “He’s one that really has contributed to our program that I’ve toyed with the idea of putting him on our varsity.”

Hairston also has been pleased with the running of Marigny Griffin, who finished fourth in the girls race.

“Mars Griffin on our girls’ side has been really consistent the past few weeks with our top performances on the JV,” he said. “I’m excited to see their growth.”

Overall, Hairston is encouraged by the finishes of the last few weeks, pointing out the district meet is right around the curve.

Burnet will compete in the Stephenville “Thrill of the Hill” meet Wednesday, Oct. 1, then the district meet.

“Our kids are being right where they need and I want them to be and not just to where our kids are running themselves in the ground,” he said. “I really want to strive to maintain as far as keeping kids healthy.”
