The Marble Falls High School girls basketball team crushed Bastrop 63-15 Nov. 18.
Head coach Adley Canales said there’s plenty to like from this game.
“We just took care of the basketball,” he said. “We were being real deliberate in what we wanted to do and not forcing anything. The girls really made it a focus to just be patient, wait till we got what we wanted, and then take advantage of it.”
The Lady Mustangs (2-3) built a 29-10 lead at the half. But instead of packing it in, Canales watched as his players continued to elevate their individual games.
“Our biggest quarter was the third quarter,” he said. “We made it a point to just go.”
By the time the period ended, Marble Falls led 54-14
“We put up 25 to their four,” the coach said. “We felt comfortable at halftime, but we didn’t want to slow down and be comfortable.”
He noted plenty of Lady Mustangs contributed to the scoring led by junior Alexis Sprott with 12, sophomore guard Mikaela Valdez and freshman post Emma Martin each scored 11, followed by sophomore Siyah MacIntosh with eight.
“We had distribution,” the coach said. “It was a real team effort, which is great to see from the coach’s perspective.”
He pointed out that though the underclassmen are scoring, the upperclassmen are doing their part by sharing the basketball.
Senior post Leslie Reynos had seven points and continues to be a force in rebounding.
“When the double team came, she found the open girl, so we expect that out of her being a senior,” Canales said. “She was first team all-district for us last year in a tough district. Everybody knows that she’s one of our main returners. She’s doing a great job of not forcing anything and finding the open girls. And that’s what helped us build a lead.”
He added coaches are emphasizing making another pass if they see a teammate has a higher percentage shot.
“We’ve been preaching that we want to go from a good shot to a great shot,” the coach said. “So, for example, if Leslie has a good shot but somebody else has a great shot, we want her to make that pass.”
And by making that pass, the Lady Mustangs are showing confidence and trust in one another, he added.
“I think the point totals prove that,” he said. “And they were distributed across-the-board. All of our girls scored, which is good because it just shows that we’re unselfish, that we’re playing for the team rather than ourselves, and we’re just playing for something bigger than ourselves.”
The Lady Mustangs now turn their attention to their own Hill Country Classic Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 20-22.
Marble Falls will play Gainesville at noon and Corpus Christi Flour Bluff at 6 p.m., both on Thursday, then finish pool play against Austin St. Dominic Savio at noon Friday, all in Max Copeland Gym before bracket play begins at 3 p.m. Friday.
The tournament features 16 teams including Austin Vandegrift, Grapevine, Katy, Kerrville Tivy, Lago Vista, Lake Travis, Lipan and San Antonio Pieper.
The entire tournament will be played at Marble Falls High School.
