The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team lost to Waco Live Oak 72-36 Jan. 17 and San Antonio Lutheran 58-26 in District 4-3A play of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.
The Lady Flames faced two teams ranked in the top five of Class 3A private schools poll the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. They were ranked No. 4.
Live Oak led 18-7 after the opening stanza, 34-16 at the half, and 54-22 after three periods.
“They’re pretty strong,” Faith head coach Harvey Vaughn said. “They’re a complete team, and they can play 10 girls, so they’re somewhat fresh the whole game, and they do what they do very well.”
The Lady Falcons used their defense to get steals they converted into buckets.
“They’re going to trap as soon as you get across half-court,” Vaughn said. “They’re trying to trap the ball. It’s just continuous pressure, and they don’t ever take it off. They keep it on you the whole game regardless of the score. The vast majority of their offense is transition offense – just fast break steals. They don’t shoot the ball really well quite honestly. But that’s not their game. They’re trying to pressure you the whole game. They’re very athletic and very aggressive.”
The Lady Flames decided being in the perimeter was helping the opponent. So they looked to cut to the basket.
“We tried to counter it by just going to attack the rim and just trying to score off the press break anytime it came across,” the coach said. “We had some periods during the game where I thought the girls did that and started to understand what that looks like and what that means.”
The Lady Flames are still adjusting to a lineup change because of injury.
Vaughn commended junior point guard Lilly Koziel, who played well despite the fact that Live Oak made it a point to limit her.
Junior post Megan Burrows led Faith with eight points followed by Kozel with seven, sophomore guards Olivia Kraenzel and Cuyleigh Zimmerman added six points apiece, sophomore guard Selby Sanchez scored four, senior guard Alyana Reyes dropped in three, and sophomore forward Layla Terrell finished with two.
Faith welcomes Temple Central Texas Christian at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20.
