The Burnet High School girls soccer team crushed Austin Achieve 7-0 Feb. 6 in District 25-4A play.
The Lady Dawgs (11-4, 5-1) scored four goals in the first half.
Brook Oliva, Bella Medina and Savannah Griffin each scored two goals and Maylin Bocanegra finished with one. Erica Flores had an assist since the Lady Dawgs scored on a couple of corner kicks where the ball “bounced around” and Oliva covered on a free kick.
“Maylin took it and shot it, and it went in in the back post,” head coach Doug Ketcham said. “It was a pretty good shot.”
The scoring was one of the bright spots. The other is the Lady Dawgs got a shutout with a new goalie, Brynlee Garza, who was moved up to the varsity.
“I think we got 26 shots and Achieve didn’t get a shot off,” the coach said. “We’re finally pretty healthy. We still don’t have everybody yet, but as far as player availability goes, it was probably the healthiest we’ve been since, I don’t know, since the first scrimmage, I guess.”
The victory illustrates several traits about these Lady Dawgs Ketcham believes will serve them well the rest of the season.
“I think confidence for sure, both offensively and defensively,” he said. “It might be the first time in district that we haven’t given up a goal. So that hopefully we’ll continue, but I think the offense is doing pretty well. It’s creating problems for other teams that I think will eventually continue to help the defense. If the other team doesn’t have the ball, then it’s tough for them to score.”
The Lady Dawgs have been scoring with more goals with Oliva back in the lineup. They are currently on a four-game winning steak and won five of their six matchers.
“It just creates chances for her teammates,” Ketcham said. “Even if she’s not putting the goal in the back of the net, she’s still creating and she’s involved in the goal. She might not get an assist, but it probably started somewhere with her.”
Now it’s about more accuracy in scoring. Ketcham was pleased with the 26 shots but would have liked to have seen more in the back of the net.
“I thought honestly (the Achiever) goalkeeper was fantastic,” he said. “It could have been much different. It could have been a lot worse than 7-0. She was their best player, she made several stops that you just didn’t think she was going to be able to make, but she did.”
Burnet welcomes Jarrell (6-3-2, 6-3-1) Tuesday, Feb. 10, with the junior varsity at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
