Burnet track wins medals from the Taylor meet

The Burnet High School track and field teams performed well at the Cotton Boll Relays hosted by Taylor High School March 5.

Both Burnet varsity teams each finished second in their divisions, while the Lady Dawgs won the junior varsity division, and the Bulldogs were third.

Lady Dawgs head coach Crystal Shipley noted the challenges from Mother Nature throughout the meet.

“Our girls raced, jumped and threw in 18–20 mph winds, which definitely made it tough to chase personal bests,” she said. “It was a great resistance training day to say the least. Because of the conditions, we challenged our girls to compete for places and points instead of (personal records), and they did exactly that.”

The freshman Lady Dawgs are performing well in the sprints. Alain Brown was second in teh 100 meters in 14.37, while Izabelle Thompson was third in the 200 meters in 29.72 seconds. Junior Savannah Myers took silver in the 200 in 29.51 seconds.

“I do have a great group of freshmen,” Shipley said. “They have definitely helped in the sprinter department. They are eager to be successful and working hard to get faster.”

Cheyenne Adams, Cali Eason, Molly Cupitt and Alaina Brown ran to silver in the 800-meter relay in 1:50.7.

Seniors Wrigley Mulhollan and Asah Roy continue to do their jobs on the track. Shipley pointed out the two have been apart of the track program for four years “and every season it never fails that I have to ask them to step up on the (1,600-meter) relay.”

Mulhollan had already taken silver in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.82 seconds and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, while Roy was third in the 1,600 meters in 5:34.52.

But it was their willingness to each run a leg of the final event of the meet that says plenty about them, according to their coach. Other Lady Dawgs include Thompson and Eason. The result was a silver medal in 4:26.16.

“After running the 800 and then immediately running the mile in that wind, Asah stepped up again for her team, two weeks in a row,” Shipley said. “After battling a strong headwind in the 100-meter hurdles and taking a hard fall in the 300-meter hurdles, Wrigley still stepped up to make sure we competed in the relay. If you want to know what leadership looks like, here it is.”

Meanwhile, the Bulldogs earned medals in just about every running event, particularly the 400-meter and 800-meter relays and were second in the 1,600-meter relay. Relay members are Caden Farmer, Lyndon Harycki, Cohen Jorpeland, Clay Lamb, and Hector Vega with Matthew Williams as the alternate.

“Incredibly proud of the way all of our relays finished,” Bulldogs head coach Jordan Heusinkveld said. “A gold medal has become the standard for the 4×100 and 4×200, and those kids came out to compete this week after losing to Cedar Park at the Lago (Vista) meet. Excited to see what those relay times will be without a 20-plus mph headwinds on the home stretch. The 4×400 had a gritty finish. Our anchor leg was able to close a 20-meter gap on Marble Falls and beat them to finish second.”

All of that simply illustrates a truth about Burnet sprinters, he added.

“We have a lot of fast kids,” Heusinkveld said. “They have been making my job difficult putting together the relays. To see a lot of our guys go out and compete and score points in the open sprints is encouraging.”

Freshman Russell Ramirez too silver in the 400 meters and bronze in the 800 meters, while sophomore Clark Yanez was fifth in the 1,600 meters and second in the 3,200 meters. This district is known for its fast distance runners. In short if they can survive the district meet to advance to area, they have a great chance at getting to regionals.

And Ramirez and Yanez are getting it done for the Bulldogs.

“Russell did a great job in both races. Look for him to be on the 4×400 moving forward. He has worked really hard to earn a spot and prove that he can compete as a freshman,” Heusinkveld said. “I’m extremely proud of Clark and the way he is going out and competing in his events. Those kids are bigger, stronger, and older than him and he refuses to back down.”

In the field events, Nathan Torres took silver in the discus with a throw of 119 feet and in the shot put with a heave of 41-2 and Colt McGraw leapt to gold in the triple jump with a mark of 41-3.5.

“Colt continues to impress,” Heusinkveld said. “He continues to keep getting stronger and faster. He moved up from the (junior varsity) this past week and showed us he belongs on varsity. He even scored us points in the open 100-meter (fourth in 12.56 seconds) and 200-meter (fifth in 24.65 seconds) races.”

“Proud of Nate,” the coach added. “He has worked really hard on improving his technique the last few weeks to eliminate scratches in his early throws, and it paid off this week.

The program will host its annual Bulldog Relays Thursday, March 12, with the 3,200 meters and the field events beginning at 1 p.m. and the running events at 3 p.m.
