Marble Falls track wins a lot at Taylor meet

The Marble Falls High School track and field program competed at the Cotton Boll Relays hosted by Taylor March 5.

The Lady Mustangs were led by junior Kenley Virdell, who took gold in the shot put with a heave of 34 feet and a half inch, was fourth in the 100 meters in 14.74 seconds, fifth in the 200 meters in 30.01 seconds, and fifth in the discus with a toss of 71-2.

“She competed extremely well, set a personal best in the shot put, and won the event by a large margin,” Lady Mustangs head coach Brenda Gonzalez said. “We’re very proud of her. She came straight from basketball and jumped right into track, immediately putting in the work. I love her competitiveness and eagerness to improve.”

The middle-distance runners continue to lead the running events for the Mustangs. Graham Goggans won gold in the 800 meters in 2:03.86, while Owen Martin bronze in the 1,600 meters in 4:42.28. Joaquim Edwards finished fourth in the 800 in 2:07.46 and in the 1,600 in 4:48.90. Connor Yaklin won the 400 meters in 54.22 seconds.

Gregory Colver was first in the 300-meter hurdles in 42.74 seconds.

In the field events, Jamir Garcia won the shot put with a heave of 42-0, while Gregory Lemon took silver in the triple jump with a mark of 41-0, and Carlos Alvarez was third in the high jump with a flop of 6-2.

In the junior varsity divisions, the Mustangs took the team title with 178 points, while the Lady Mustangs were second with 152 points.

The boys were led by Diego Aguilar, Jaxson Bales, Caiden Calvery, Zathan Gonzalez, Logan Hargraves, Nicolai Monette, Austin Mitchusson and Jerry Walker.

As for the girls, freshman Sapana Khatri took bronze in the 400 meters in 1:07.78 and silver in the 800 meters in 2:43.82 adding a new personal best. She ran on the 1,600-meter relay team that took gold in 4:33.41. Senior Kelsey Cude also ran a leg in the mile relay and took second in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.05. Sophomore Adriana George, another mile relay member, also helped the 800-meter relay team to bronze and earned a gold medal in the 200 meters in 28.99 seconds.

Middle-distance runners Katerina Moseley and Graci Nelson performed well in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

“I love their competitiveness and the way this group continues to grow together as a team,” Gonzalez said.

Throwers Ella Hillman, Lyndee Saunders and Kate Dykes made their way to the podium thanks to finishing in the top three in the shot put and discus.

“It’s been fun watching this group develop,” Gonzalez said.

Marble Falls will compete at the Burnet Bulldog Relays Thursday, March 12, with the 3,200 meters and field events starting at 1 p.m. and the running events at 3 p.m.
