The Faith Academy of Marble Falls track and field program hoisted two District 3-3A trophies of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools recently.
The first was the boys team championship and the other was for runner-up in the girls division.
“It was wonderful to get a team win,” head coach Steve McCannon said. “We are about winning championships. We had a path once again for the guys to win district. But going back to the rules – the No. 1 rule is to qualify (for the regional meet) – that’s was our mindset. We want to qualify, and then we’re going try to win the team championship.”
Senior Beau Steele took gold in the 200 meters in 23.85 seconds and in the 400 meters in 51.47 seconds. Freshman Seamus Rasmussen medaled in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Sophomore Landon Silvers won gold in the 300-meter hurdles in 43.02 seconds, silver in the 110-meter high hurdles in 17.76 seconds, and bronze in the shot put with a heave of 35 feet and 3 inches.
Sophomore Egan Barnes earned a silver medal in the long jump with a leap of 20-1 and finished fourth in the high jump with a flop of 5-6. Freshman Colt Mason won the triple jump with a mark of 40-4.
What made this team victory even sweeter is that several athletes competed in the regional golf tournament and Case and Hudson Tatum, who finished second and third in the discus, played boys doubles for the academy’s tennis program that won the Class 3A state title.
“Once again being flexible with multiple sports is the 100 percent reason we were able to win this district championship,” the coach said. “It’s all in scheduling, it’s navigating the minefield of the spring schedule. There’s really no path to win unless you’re flexible. I’m just proud of the boys.”
Headed into the meet, McCannon said he and his coaches thought the Lady Flames would finish second, which is a great accomplishment because the team had fewer athletes on the squad this year.
“We were maybe hoping (Temple Central Texas Christian) would make a mistake here and there, but they’re a really good team,” he said. “As always at a district meet, the No. 1 rule is qualify (for the regional meet) and the second rule at a district meet is to remember the first rule. We want to qualify and survive and advance, so that was our mentality with the girls. I’m proud of them for making sure we did get second. It ends a six-year winning streak but as we move to region and state, I know this team is going to continue to develop and progress.”
The Lady Flames were led by senior Zoe Rhoads, who took gold in the 300-meter hurdles in 52.07 seconds, silver in the long jump with a mark of 15.8-25, and bronze in the triple jump with a leap of 31-.05.
“Zoe was the sixth seed in the hurdles and ended up winning, and so that was a big win for the team and our morale,” the coach said.
Senior thrower Miley Fessler earned silver in the shot put with a heave of 34-5 and was fourth in the discus with a toss of 91-7.
A pair of sophomores also contributed to the team score. Cuyleigh Zimmerman took double bronze in the 200 meters in 28.95 seconds, in the triple jump with a leap of 15-6.25, and was a member of two relay teams. Eden Thames earned silver in the triple jump with a leap of 32-1, was fourth in the long jump with a mark of 15-5.25 and ran on the relays.
“Both qualified in five events,” McCannon said. “I would say those three really stood out as doing an excellent job. They were all really good performances. There will be a path to the state meet if they can perform like that again.”
The regional track meet is Thursday, April 30, at Antonian College Preparatory High School in San Antonio.
“We’re going to clean stuff up and move on to region and state,” McCannon said. “We’ll see what we can do to see if we can crawl up the podium. We have to regroup again and get ready for region, where there’s a strong (Rockwall) Providence team and then also CTC will be in the hunt. And so we have to refocus and we have to qualify for state.”
