Burnet baseball stays hungry for more success in 2023

The Burnet High School baseball team’s motivation for the 2023 season is how the Bulldogs’ 2022 season ended in a bi-district series loss to LaGrange. “I think they got a taste of it last year as a team getting in the playoffs,” head coach Russell Houston said. “They didn’t like how it ended. You give up four runs in three games and your season is over because you don’t hit. They came back a little hungrier. They like the feel of the playoffs.” Fans can see the Bulldogs during the…

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Here’s a truly scary thought from players who aren’t taking advantage of voluntary strength-and-conditioning programs — the belief they can get ready in August. My advice is not to wait. Get in weight rooms now, get on tracks and fields now because thinking there’s enough time to get prepared for a grueling season in less than 30 days is simply not thinking clearly. Few great athletes can…

Marble Falls graduate Staggs uses the tools he learned as a Mustang to build successful program at Perrin-Whitt

When it comes to building facilities and a program, Ben Staggs learned both as a Marble Falls High School student. The 1993 graduate announced he had resigned as the athletic director and head football and baseball coach at Perrin-Whitt High School, a Class 1A member, and accepted a job at nearby Peaster Independent School District where he’ll be an assistant coach and is bracing to split time between the high school and junior high. At Perrin-Whitt, Staggs was responsible for field maintenance, a skill he got a taste of the…

Burnet athletics finishes Lone Star Cup race in the top 25

The University Interscholastic League announced final standings for the Lone Star Cup races in all classes, and Burnet High School finished No. 23 in Class 4A. Athletic director Kurt Jones presented the results during the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees meeting June 20. “I think it’s the highest overall finish for us since they started that (competition),” he said. “That’s about out of 230 Class 4A schools. We feel like it was a great year for us collectively.” In late March Burnet was No. 11 that included…

Burnet’s Vance makes most of all-star game appearance

Recent Burnet High School graduate Ralston Vance made his community proud June 12 by his play at the Austin Area Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game. Vance, who was a second baseman for the North team, handled a line ball that started a double play to end the contest and drew a walk and struckout in his two at-bats. Each team had nine pitchers and two players at each of the remaining positions. The game ended in a 7-7 tie after nine innings. “I think he had a lot of fun…

Four Marble Falls baseball players named to all-district list

In a district that produced the state champion, four Marble Falls High School baseball players were recognized for their seasons by District 25-5A coaches. Third baseman Jon “Gouda” Zamarippa and outfielder Bryce Atkinson were named to the second team, while pitcher Hudson McBryde and outfielder Cale Cochran were named honorable mention. “The two on the second team deserved it,” Mustangs head coach Tyler Porter said. “They were two important guys for our team.” Atkinson’s bat is what swung in his favor. He bat .305. “He had a good year at…

Burnet coaches see big increase in attendance for voluntary workouts

The number of Bulldogs attending voluntary strength-and-conditioning sessions thrills the Burnet High School coaching staff. That’s according to defensive coordinator Ben Speer. Burnet is averaging triple-digit attendance by athletes in grades 7-12, about 50 percent increase from summer 2021. The seven-week summer strength-and-conditioning sessions began June 6. “We can’t be disappointed with that,” Speer said. “Last summer we had 60 guys, and we thought that was good.” Several factors have contribute to the increase of attendees, he said. First, head coach Bryan Wood is beginning his second summer in Burnet.…
