Texas teams flounder in marquee matchups

A week after Texas, Texas A&M and Houston recorded huge victories to ensure the state was the talk of college football in week one, Texas Tech and TCU were unable to add to the conversation. The Red Raiders (1-1) lost a back-and-forth game to Arizona State 68-55. Untimely turnovers and special teams undid Tech as well as a record-setting night by Sun Devils running back Kalen Ballage. He set a record for eight touchdowns in one game by rushing for seven, from the wildcat, thanks to 13 carries for 137…

Aggies not taking the Panthers lightly

Though Texas A&M is facing Prairie View A&M, a team that doesn’t pose the same challenges of a top 25 opponent, Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin said his players aren’t taking the Panthers lightly. “Don’t take any of these games lightly. Starts with us in games like this. Things we have to get better.” The two kick off at 11 a.m. Sept. 10 on the SEC Network. Add in the fact Texas A&M (1-0) is used to playing later in the day, and Sumlin said coaches will emphasize a need to be…

A clash of wills meet in Fort Worth

TCU is looking to beat Arkansas for the first time in three decades. The Horned Frogs (1-0), who beat South Dakota State 59-41 to begin the season, last defeated the Razorbacks in Fort Worth 28-24 in 1981 when the two were members of the Southwest Conference. The last time TCU beat Arkansas was a 56-24 victory in Fayetteville in 1990. The two squads kick off at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 on ESPN. But it’s safe to say things have changed since those games decades ago. First, the Horned Frogs are ranked, run a spread offense…

Longhorns win because they play for one another

It wasn’t so much that Texas beat Notre Dame 50-47 in double overtime that excited fans, though that can’t be overlooked since it’s the biggest win in the Charlie Strong era. This victory was about how the Longhorns, when things were going badly, didn’t quit. It’s about how they kept encouraging one another, how they depended on each other to play their roles and come up big when it mattered most. Strong said as much during his Monday press conference about 12 hours after the win. “The first two years,…

Aggies’ win isn’t an upset considering how it was gained

It may have needed to be won in overtime, but Texas A&M’s 31-24 victory over UCLA shouldn’t be thought of as an upset. That’s because the Aggies outperformed the Bruins for three consecutive quarters, especially in the third when Texas A&M outscored UCLA 14-0. During that span, the Aggies made UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen uncomfortable, made Bruins receivers unsteady in catching balls, and made running back Soso Jamabo pay for carrying the ball. Credit Aggies defensive coordinator John Chavis for preparing his unit to play its best, which included nabbing three…
