The Burnet High School girls soccer team’s history-making season ended in a 1-0 loss to Bay City in a Class 4A Region III semifinal April 8. The Lady Dawgs (18-8-3, 11-4 District 18-4A) finished third in the district race and played in four playoff games this season, the most by any Burnet soccer team in program history. “I will take away that heart can one hundred percent win games,” head coach Kimberly Myhre said. “I had 25 on the varsity by the end of the season. There’s not any other…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on the writer. Let’s begin with what I believe is the most anticipated contest of the weekend in north Burnet County. It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

Becker to swap MFalls purple & gold for HSU purple & yellow

After leading the Marble Falls High School football team to the 2020 and 2021 playoffs, senior quarterback Jake Becker will suit up for Hardin-Simmons University in fall 2022. Playing college football was a goal for the son of Krystal and Matt Becker, who was the Mustangs quarterback in the mid 1990s, and passed his love of the sport to his son. The younger Becker’s favorite part is the teamwork football requires. “I grew up playing it and loving it,” he said. “I genuinely enjoy being around everybody, the environment it…

Barnes to take talents to Texas Lutheran University

After helping the Marble Falls High School football team flip field position with his powerful punts and kickoffs, senior place kicker and punter Logan Barnes is aiming to do the same for Texas Lutheran University. Barnes committed to play for the Bulldogs as a punter and a shot and discus thrower for the track and field squad. “It felt like Marble Falls,” he said. “It feels like family where the players are going to be first. They were going to do the best for me if I did the best…

Lady Dawgs punch ticket to regional tourney, a program first

The Burnet High School girls soccer team’s historical march through the 2022 Class 4A playoffs continues thanks to a thrilling 3-2 double overtime win over undefeated Giddings in the regional quarterfinals on April 1. The Lady Dawgs (18-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A) used a crossing pass and nailed two penalty kicks to end the Lady Buffaloes’ (19-1-1, 8-0 District 19-4A) season. “Those girls hadn’t lost all season,” Burnet head coach Kimberly Myhre said of Giddings. “And no one expected us to win. The girls wanted to win. They pumped each other…

Lady Dawgs add another item to program’s record books

The Burnet High School girls soccer team made history on March 29 by advancing to the Class 4A regional quarterfinals, the third round of the postseason, for the first time in program history. The Lady Dawgs (17-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A third place) crushed Sealy (16-6-1, 13-1 District 20-4A champion) 6-1 in the area round of the playoffs. “Those girls walked out and they wanted that gold ball,” head coach Kimberly Myhre said. “They left a legacy for us. We get to continue it. This group has worked so hard, they…

Lady Dawgs capitalize on corner kick for playoff victory

For the third time in program history, the Burnet High School girls soccer team captured a bi-district championship thanks to a 1-0 win against China Spring March 25. The Lady Dawgs (16-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A third place) got the winning score on a corner kick by Kaycie Banton thanks to an assist from Reagan Shipley with about nine minutes left in the game. Burnet will face Sealy (16-5-1, 13-1 District 20-4A champion), a 5-0 winner over Smithville, in the area round of the playoffs with date, site and time still…

Lady Dawgs see positives in loss at Salado Lady Eagles

The Burnet High School girls soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-1 loss to Salado March 14. Still, the Lady Dawgs (15-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A) have plenty in front of them, including representing the district as the third-place team in the playoffs. While that opponent from District 17-4A is still unknown because that district finishes up the regular season March 15, Burnet isn’t sitting and waiting around. Head coach Kimberly Myhre had scheduled a warm-up match against San Angelo Lake View representing District 3-4A at 3 p.m. Monday,…

Mustangs finish the 2022 season, look to the future

Following a 2-0 loss to Leander Rouse on March 12, the Marble Falls High School boys soccer team provided purple balloons to its seniors, asking them to release them to symbolize the end of their eligibility and what will happen to them in the next few months. “It’s very easy for me to (define) this team,” head coach Rick Hoover said. “It’s character. I told them this all year. By far this has been my favorite team because of the quality of kids they are. I could turn my back…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The big news in south Burnet County is at 2101 Mustang Drive where Marble Falls athletics director and head football coach Brian Herman is replacing offensive coordinator Heath Hohmann and defensive coordinator Zane Bode. Both are leaving on their own. Hohmann accepted the job as athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan, a Class 2A school, while Bode, in his words, retired to “become a cowboy.”…
