Edwards wanted Marble Falls coaching hires to help students succeed in all phases

Rick Edwards did more than repeat the Marble Falls Independent School District’s motto of having an unyielding commitment to loving every child — he lived it. That was apparent by the way the MFISD board trustee voted when it came to policies, funding unexpected expenses such as trips for extracurricular activities, and especially hires. Edwards died May 7 from a brain hemorrhage on the same day he was re-elected to the board. While it’s a given that every MFISD employee embraces the district motto and shows it, the truth is…

Lady Flames win playoff game thanks to great start to the contest

Few people may have given the Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team a chance against Plano Coram Deo in a Class 2A playoff game May 6. But the Lady Flames didn’t pay any attention. Instead, they arrived with the intention of getting a win and set the tone immediately in a 13-11 victory for what most believe can’t be more than the program’s second playoff win ever. Next up is Pflugerville Concordia, a district foe that beat Faith twice in the regular season. The game is set for a…

Lady Dawgs are getting ready for third game against Gateway

An unexpected loss not by the Burnet High School softball team caused an unexpected play-in game for the final District 19-4A playoff spot. Following a 10-0 loss to Lake Belton April 19, the Lady Dawgs (4-6) found out that Georgetown Gateway (4-6) outlasted Taylor 3-1. With both Burnet and Gateway splitting the regular-season head-to-head matchups, the two will now play on Friday, April 22, at 6 p.m. at Jarrell High School. “If we show up, I’ll feel confident,” Burnet head coach Hailey Wooten said. “I think we have taught (our…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insight

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The week is big for the Burnet and Marble Falls high school track teams. Both will be competing at area meets with athletes aiming to get to regional meets. Pole vaulters on both squads advanced to area meets, which might be the most impressive finishes of the 17 events at district meets. And that’s saying something particularly in north Burnet County, which we’ll get to in a…

Errors lead to very different outcomes for the Lady Dawgs

Bad weather April 12 forced the Burnet High School softball team to play in back-to-back contests April 13-14 where the Lady Dawgs got different results. Burnet (19-8, 5-4 District 19-4A) defeated Taylor (6-3) 6-4 one night after losing to Salado (3-5) 9-4. “It was huge,” head coach Hailey Wooten said of the win. “They could see our playoff hopes dwindling, and they knew that’s not how it’s supposed to be, not with all the potential we have. It was needed for sure.” The Lady Dawgs were able to send the…

Lady Dawgs have few answers for Gateway’s solid pitching

The Burnet High School softball team lost to Georgetown Gateway 6-3 on April 8. Lady Gators (2-5( freshman pitcher Chloe Ellis struck out 10 in seven complete innings against the Lady Dawgs (18-7, 4-3 District 19-4A) . “They have a great pitcher,” Lady Dawgs head coach Hailey Wooten said. “We didn’t see her the first time we played them until the end of the game. We were able to score six runs off that (other) pitcher.” While Wooten complimented Gateway’s pitching and defense, she noted the Lady Dawgs also didn’t…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on the writer. Let’s begin with what I believe is the most anticipated contest of the weekend in north Burnet County. It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

Lady Dawgs back to winning ways in shortened contest

The Burnet High School softball team snapped a three-game losing skid April 5 with a bang — literally. The Lady Dawgs (18-6, 3-3 District 19-4A) crushed Jarrell 15-5 in a contest where they had three home runs en route to finishing the game in six innings. The Lady Dawgs swept the series against the Lady Cougars. “They were due,” head coach Hailey Wooten said of the offensive explosion. After the Lady Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Burnet plated two in its half of the inning, another…

Miscues lead to Lady Dawgs’ first loss in district play

Good teams will take advantage of errors and miscues by opponents and romp to victory, which is what happened to the Burnet High School softball team in an 11-4 loss to Salado March 25. “That just wasn’t us,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “That’s not the way we play. Salado’s a great softball team. We’re not going to beat them by making mistakes and errors. It was a little bit of everything: not hitting, not making a throw, not catching the ball.” Wooten noted the miscues were contagious and it…
