Marble Falls ISD weight rooms get big upgrades thanks to booster club’s contribution

The Marble Falls Athletic Booster Club unanimously voted to contribute $19,000 towards upgrades to the weight rooms at Marble Falls high school and middle school during a meeting Aug. 4. Those votes electrified attendees, coaches and the athletes. “There’s tingling in my arms,” club president Shannon Roberts said. “I’ve never seen that type of excitement in the room. We have goals, and this is what we do as a booster club.” That is take care of the student-athletes by assisting coaches in helping them obtain equipment and other needs to…

Burnet football’s Moms Night Out gives participants a better understanding of the sport

A new group of athletes emerged from the meeting room of the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District field house Aug. 4 determined to learn even more about the game of football from those who know it best – the Bulldog coaches and players themselves. The new group — more than 60 mothers of the current players — had visited Bulldog Field numerous times, but rarely did they understand some of the basic concepts of the sport such as the positions, what the players and coaches do at practices, and why…

Smoking For Jesus Eagles’ motivation for a three-peat shows in their attendance

The end of practice Aug. 4 wasn’t what the Smoking For Jesus Ministry School’s football staff wanted to see. So new offensive coordinator Russ Roberts asked the players to get back in their formations to run one more play. With the intensity kicked up, the Eagles displayed what the coaches wanted: movements where every player knew where to go and who to block, a toss to the running back that hit him in stride and allowed him to quickly read where to go, and a defense that fought through the…

Marble Falls Mustangs will discover their ‘dudes’ in the next few weeks

This August is unlike any other for the Marble Falls High School football program because of the attention paid to the Mustangs that hasn’t been witnessed since the David Denney days of the 1990s. Austin television stations have attended practice and Craig Way of 104.9 The Horn interviewed Herman Aug. 2 to get the latest on a program that posted a 16-7 record, including three victories in the playoffs, the last two seasons. In short, the Mustangs have earned the interest from others outside of the Highland Lakes because of…

Burnet Lady Dawgs changes goals, prepares for another march

Every part of The Doghouse and the auxiliary gym at Burnet High School were being utilized in helping the Burnet volleyball staff make evaluations to determine roster spots for the 2022 season. Head coach Crystal Shipley had an obstacle most coaches welcome. Everywhere she looked, she saw talent among the 47 athletes in grades 9-12, a testament to the Lady Dawgs themselves for their dedication to being their best and to their coaches for instilling in them a love of the sport. It also helps that the Lady Dawgs added…

Offseason preparation shows during Burnet football’s training camp

The intensity and enthusiasm were contagious at Bulldog Field Tuesday, Aug. 2, the second day of fall training camp for the Burnet Bulldogs. The players and coaches accomplished plenty, which compelled head coach Bryan Wood to call an end to the session 15 minutes earlier than was originally planned, a reward to the players for their commitment to getting a lot of work done with the attitude, attention to detail and commitment Wood wanted to see. The Bulldogs had 64 players in grades 10-12 participate with another 45 freshmen who…

The Point After: Marble Falls fall sports want to earn respect

Spending a few hours at Marble Falls High School Aug. 1 allowed me to observe some of the athletes donning the purple and gold for the football and volleyball teams and talk to head coaches about their impressions of the first day. On the artificial turf at Mustang Stadium were other media members who are as curious about this year’s football team as me. After all, on paper it looks like a full-on rebuild with senior tailback Caleb Vidal being the only returning starter on offense, while a couple more,…

A new district, depth gives the Marble Falls Lady Mustangs plenty of optimism

Different sports have different ways of measuring commitment, determination and heart. In volleyball, it’s the players running a mile. That’s where the Marble Falls High School volleyball team started the first day of two-a-days with 32 players lined up on the Leonel Manzano Track at Mustang Stadium at 8 a.m. as coaches held timers while watching the run. “It’s endurance, it’s also mental toughness,” head coach Kait Goertz said. “Who can push through? I know what they’re capable of. It’s setting that personal gage. It’s a battle with the heat…

Marble Falls Mustangs exhibit the traits coaches want to see on first day of training camp

The Marble Falls High School football team was on the artificial turf at Mustang Stadium at 6 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1, to officially kick off the 2022 campaign on the first day of training camp. More than 70 players in grades 10-12 wore gold helmets and were in either a purple or yellow jersey. The morning session lasted a little more than two hours and head coach Brian Herman saved the best for last – a series of gassers that forces the players to run from one sideline to the…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. Training camps start for fall sports on Monday, Aug. 1. Here are questions each team will answer in the next few weeks. Listening to a couple of the Marble Falls Mustangs talk about their new District 13-4A Division I opponents tells me they understand this district will be much more challenging than the one they were in the last two years.
