It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

The Burnet High School softball team snapped a three-game losing skid April 5 with a bang — literally. The Lady Dawgs (18-6, 3-3 District 19-4A) crushed Jarrell 15-5 in a contest where they had three home runs en route to finishing the game in six innings. The Lady Dawgs swept the series against the Lady Cougars. “They were due,” head coach Hailey Wooten said of the offensive explosion. After the Lady Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Burnet plated two in its half of the inning, another…

Lady Dawgs punch ticket to regional tourney, a program first

The Burnet High School girls soccer team’s historical march through the 2022 Class 4A playoffs continues thanks to a thrilling 3-2 double overtime win over undefeated Giddings in the regional quarterfinals on April 1. The Lady Dawgs (18-7-3, 11-4 District 18-4A) used a crossing pass and nailed two penalty kicks to end the Lady Buffaloes’ (19-1-1, 8-0 District 19-4A) season. “Those girls hadn’t lost all season,” Burnet head coach Kimberly Myhre said of Giddings. “And no one expected us to win. The girls wanted to win. They pumped each other…

Miscues lead to Lady Dawgs’ first loss in district play

Good teams will take advantage of errors and miscues by opponents and romp to victory, which is what happened to the Burnet High School softball team in an 11-4 loss to Salado March 25. “That just wasn’t us,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “That’s not the way we play. Salado’s a great softball team. We’re not going to beat them by making mistakes and errors. It was a little bit of everything: not hitting, not making a throw, not catching the ball.” Wooten noted the miscues were contagious and it…

Lady Dawgs remain unbeaten, see areas to get better

The Burnet High School softball team scored all the runs it needed in the second inning to beat Georgetown Gateway 7-3 March 22. The Lady Dawgs plated six runs. “Five runs came on two outs,” head coach Hailey Wooten said. “And then we scored another one late. It’s deflating for the other team, and hitting is contagious. Once they get started hitting, they go score runs.” The Lady Dawgs (17-3, 2-0 District 19-4A) recorded eight hits in the contest. Lanee McCurry led with 2 RBIs, while Maddie Moise had 1…
