Lady Flames win playoff game thanks to great start to the contest

Few people may have given the Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team a chance against Plano Coram Deo in a Class 2A playoff game May 6. But the Lady Flames didn’t pay any attention. Instead, they arrived with the intention of getting a win and set the tone immediately in a 13-11 victory for what most believe can’t be more than the program’s second playoff win ever. Next up is Pflugerville Concordia, a district foe that beat Faith twice in the regular season. The game is set for a…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. This weekend is the first of several state track meets beginning with the Class 2A meet of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys team is looking to successfully defend its state title. Head coach Steve McCannon, who is a numbers whiz as well as a great coach, told me his projections showed the team title will come down…

Faith freshmen bring home state championship in girls doubles

The tradition of the Faith Academy of Marble Falls tennis team earning a state championship continued thanks to a pair of left-handed freshmen. Ryan Delmonico and Jaden Turrentine went 4-0 in girls doubles at the Class 2A state meet of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools April 6-7 to win it all. Because the duo are freshmen, they didn’t receive a seed, which is given based on past history at the tournament. Still, it didn’t matter to them, who also won the district championship by going 4-0. “I…

Flames win regionals for third time, Lady Flames finish third

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls boys and girls track and field teams finished first and third at the South Region meet of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools on April 27. The Flames were considered the favorites to win the meet and performed at that level, while the Lady Flames were projected to be in the top three, head coach Steve McCannon said. “It was closer than expected and yet not unexpected,” he said. “The level of competition goes up because of field events. We missed a…

Ross is the district runner-up, moves on to state tournament

Faith Academy of Marble Falls senior golfer Libby Ross is returning to the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools state tournament after finishing as the runner-up at the district tournament April 25. Ross shot an 89, one stroke behind the district champion. It’s the third time in four years Ross is headed to state. The only year she didn’t go was 2020 when the event was cancelled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2019, she was fifth overall at the state tournament and was third in 2021. The Class…

Flames enjoy another lopsided victory in shortened contest

San Marcos Hill Country hosted senior night before the start of its baseball game against Faith Academy of Marble Falls April 8, so the Flames braced for the Rams’ best effort. Needless to say, Hill Country found few answers thanks to sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw, who led the Flames (5-2, 3-0 District 3-2A Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools) to a 16-0 win in a contest that ended after three innings. Shaw had an in-park grand slam and finished with 5 RBIs. Carter Fromberg and Dylan Offutt each had…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on the writer. Let’s begin with what I believe is the most anticipated contest of the weekend in north Burnet County. It’s the Burnet High School girls soccer team against Bay City in the Class 4A Region III semifinals. The contest kicks off at 11 a.m. Friday, April 8, in Katy. Bay City, like Lumberton and Lake Belton, are district champions. But don’t discount the Lady Dawgs. Here’s why. Burnet…

Ten Highland Lakes Sports Insights

Welcome to this weekly column where readers will find a summary of sports across the region and the impressions left on this writer. The big news in south Burnet County is at 2101 Mustang Drive where Marble Falls athletics director and head football coach Brian Herman is replacing offensive coordinator Heath Hohmann and defensive coordinator Zane Bode. Both are leaving on their own. Hohmann accepted the job as athletics director and head football coach at Skidmore-Tynan, a Class 2A school, while Bode, in his words, retired to “become a cowboy.”…

Flames earn second win in shortened game

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls baseball team earned another run-rule win March 7. The Flames (2-0) beat New Braunfels Christian Academy 13-3 in five innings. After NBCA took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, Faith exploded for seven runs in the second, three in the fourth, and three in the fifth. Senior Case Coleman had 3 RBIs off 2 hits. Seth Jones got the Faith bats going by hitting a double in left field that fired up his teammates. Sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw (2-0) earned the win by…

Opening loss doesn’t discourage Faith

The Faith Academy of Marble Falls softball team began the 2022 season with an 18-10 loss to Concordia Christian School on March 7. The Lady Flames (0-1) committed seven errors in the contest. Concordia scored 14 runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings after trailing 7-4 in the fourth. Head coach Delaney Ferguson noted the players will need time to improve. “We have a young team,” she said. “Some have been playing softball for years, some haven’t played in years, and some haven’t touched a ball in their whole…
