Burnet volleyball captures second consecutive district crown

The Burnet High School volleyball team successfully defended their district championship by beating Georgetown Gateway 25-21, 25-21, 21-25. 25-23 Oct. 21.
“We are so proud of this great accomplishment,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “They have all worked very hard for this. Our Lady Dawgs played together and put on a show.”
She noted the match was worthy of a district championship, pointing out that a Gateway win would have meant sharing the title with the Lady Gators.
“The girls came out on fire and won the first two sets,” Shipley said. “The third set was just as much a nail biter as the first two, but things didn’t go our way. The fourth set was a lot of back and forth with the lead and truly an incredible fight.”
The Burnet junior varsity lost in three sets and since Gateway didn’t have enough players for a freshman squad, ninth-graders played in the junior varsity contest.
The Lady Dawgs close out the regular season in matches against Jarrell at The Doghouse Tuesday, Oct. 25, with the subvarsities playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity following. The playoffs begin next week. The program will honor its seniors before the varsity match.
“We hope everyone can make it for our final home game of the season before playoffs begin,” Shipley said.
