Flames begin season with eye-popping performance

When the Faith Academy of Marble Falls baseball team trotted onto the YMCA of the Highland Lakes field for its season opener March 4, few knew what to expect. And yet no one expected what they saw. The Flames crushed Bulverde Living Rock 15-0 in a contest that ended after three innings because of the run rule. Sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw threw a no-hitter and struck out eight batters and walked three. Offensively, junior Justin Mottle had 4 RBIs. Faith head coach Zakk Revelle noted that Living Rock wasn’t at…

Lady Dawg returns to Class 4A powerlifting state meet

Burnet High School sophomore Abby Smith qualified for the Class 4A Division I powerlifting state meet after finishing third overall in the 114-pound division at regionals on March 4. Smith lifted a total of 635 pounds thanks to squatting 254 pounds, bench-pressing 145 pounds, and dead-lifting 250 pounds. She set new personal bests in the deadlift, the bench press and in the overall total. The state is divided into eight regions. The top two lifters in each region automatically qualify. But Smith’s total weight lifted was the best of the…

Mustangs give The Helping Center some needed muscle

Sam Pearce, executive director of The Helping Center, was in a bind. He had a “big warehouse” truck carrying numerous pallets averaging 1,500 pounds of food apiece and didn’t have enough volunteers to empty the vehicle. In all, it totaled 30,000 pounds of food. Volunteer Lauren Haltom heard Pearce’s dilemma and offered to contact Marble Falls head football coach Brian Herman to see if the Mustangs could stop by. It didn’t take long for Herman to say yes. By 7:30 a.m. on March 1, the players arrived and immediately went…

Lady Dawgs look to continue season success in the spring

Burnet High School is extremely proud of the accomplishments of both the volleyball and basketball teams during the 2021-22 school year, and girls athletics coordinator Rick Gates believes there’s plenty more great memories to be made in the spring, especially from the soccer and softball squads. The Lady Dawgs already sealed a berth in the Class 4A soccer playoffs, and the softball team is 9-2 before beginning District 19-4A play March 15. While tennis has played a fall schedule and returned to the courts this semester already, golf and tennis…

Mustangs announce postseason awards

The Marble Falls High School football celebrated the accomplishments of the 2021 season with its annual banquet Feb. 28. Head coach Brian Herman had scheduled the event for earlier in the semester, but weather forced a date change. Herman and coaches weren’t in a hurry to have this event since it is the last gathering to commemorate a Mustangs team that reached the third round of the playoffs, a first for this century. He had released the all-District 14-5A Division II teams around the holidays but doesn’t release the Mustang…

Lady Dawgs qualify for Class 4A playoffs

The Burnet High School girls soccer team earned one of the four playoff berths in District 19-4A thanks to some impressive individual performances that led to lopsided victories. “The Lady Dawgs have been putting in work the last two weeks,” head coach Kimberly Myhre said, “and it has paid off.” Burnet (11-7-1, 8-2) completed the season sweep of Gatesville (7-5, 5-4) 1-0 Feb. 25 after beating Florence (2-14, 1-6) 7-0 Feb. 22 and Little River Academy (0-15, 0-9) 7-0 Feb. 18. Currently the Lady Dawgs are in third place with…

Lady Dawgs will be remembered for more than season record

The Burnet High School girls basketball team’s season ended with a 64-39 loss to Sour Lake Hardin Jefferson in the Class 4A Region III final Feb. 26 after the Lady Dawgs defeated Huffman Hargrave 45-40 in a regional semifinal on Feb. 25 in Lufkin. But the ending isn’t what head coach Rick Gates and the Lady Dawgs will remember about the 2021-22 season. Instead, they’ll treasure how they earned their 19-13 overall record and went 8-0 during the District 19-4A campaign to be the district champions en route to constructing…
