The Burnet High School boys basketball team beat Waco Robinson 55-51 Jan. 3.
The Bulldogs led 9-8 after the opening stanza and then dropped in 23 points in the second quarter en route to a 32-23 half-time advantage thanks to hitting some 3-pointers and forcing the Rockets to guard long-range shooters.
“We played decent defense,” head coach Roy Kiser said. “We got two 10-second counts in the back court against their press break (to force turnovers) and that helped.”
But the Rockets fought back, cutting the deficit to 39-34 going into the final quarter. With three minutes left, Robinson led by three. But the Bulldogs scored a 3-pointer and then hit nine free throws to seal the victory.
“Credit our guys for staying ahead of them,” Kiser said. “Robinson did some things defensively that we had to counter, and our kids did a good job of it.”
He noted his team “fell in love with the 3-point shot in the third quarter,” so the Bulldogs had to adjust.
“We had to remind ourselves how to attack their defense when we miss two or three in a row,” Kiser said. “Reese Syphrett hit a mid-range jumper, and that opened things up a little. Our guys do a good job of sharing the ball and trusting each other because they know that any of them are capable of scoring.”
Kiser summed up the Bulldogs’ defense.
“Our defense still needs work,” he said. “There are moments we look great, but overall we have to improve that aspect of the game.”
Junior guard Baylor Dawes led the Bulldogs with 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Junior guard Andre Miller added 12 points, and freshman center Lane Holder scored seven.
Burnet welcomes Stephenville Friday, Jan. 6, to The Doghouse with the subvarsities playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
