Burnet Bulldog Relays sees numerous records broken, welcomes back stars

Many District 24-4A track-and-field teams competed at the Burnet Bulldog Relays March 23 where it welcomed back one of the best runners in the state, witnessed numerous athletes set new personal bests, and one set a new program record.

He is Brayden Hill, who cleared 14 feet and 9 inches in the pole vault to break David Lindley’s program record of 14-6 that he set in 2008.

“Brayden Hill battled through some 25 mph wind gusts to break and set a new school record,” Burnet boys head coach Ben Speer said. “Brady Rygaard also had a great showing finishing second at 14 feet.”

Burnet senior distance runner Hudson Bennett made his 2023 debut and showed once more why he is among the elite in Texas by earning a silver medal in the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes and 11-tenths of a second. Isaias Zarate was fifth in 10:39.18. Victor Aviles took bronze in the 1,600 meters in 4:40.25, while Zarate was ninth in 4:57.22.

“It’s great having Hudson back,” Speer said. “Not just because he is a great competitor. He’s also a great teammate. I’m just happy to see him back on the track again after his injury. Victor Aviles has done a great job this year juggling soccer and track. He’s gonna be something special, too, before it’s all said and done.”

Grant Jones took gold in the 200 meters in 22.80 seconds, the long jump with a leap of 20-3.75, and in the triple jump with a mark of 43-5.

“Grant continues to shine in every meet,” Speer said. “The greatest thing about Grant is that you don’t have to motivate him to work or practice hard. Competing on meet day is the fun part. Getting up early and coming after school is a grind. He doesn’t mind it at all.”

The Marble Falls High School team saw solid performances in the sprints, girls pole vault, and the discus.

Zach Woody won the 400 meters in 50.95 seconds to set a new personal best.

“Zach Woody brought home gold in a loaded open 400 line-up with a huge personal record,” head coach Austin Silva said. “Which is a testament to his unparalleled work ethic at practice. His 400 time has dropped each meet and if it continues, look for him to make a post-season run. Can not say enough about how hard he works and how proud I am to see it pay off for him.”

In the 100 meters Jaime Castillo was fifth in 11.80 seconds, while teammate Adrian Martinez was sixth in 11.85 seconds.

“Very pleased with our sprinters performance,” Silva said. “We have had a series of unfortunate events occur over the last few weeks resulting in several of our sprinters to miss meets, including (the Bulldog Relays), but the depth we have allows us to fill those spots and still compete for top three finishes. Proud of our kids overcoming and finishing strong.”

In discus Kylie Roberts won gold in the girls varsity division, while Jeremiah Bales took silver.

“Coach (Richard) Scales has done a tremendous job with his throwers,” Silva said. “He has them trusting the process and starting to peak at the right time.”

And the trio of pole vaulters Anne McCary, Katherine McCary and Morgan Burke finished third, fourth and fifth with heights of 9-0 apiece.

“Our vaulters have established a bit of a tradition over the last few years and expect to do well,” Silva said. “Very proud of them for continuing to do what they do best, bring home medals.”

Speer noted it’s been two weeks since Bulldogs in a meet, and coaches were pleased.

“This was our first meet back,” Speer said. “I thought we did really well.  It showed that our kids were taking their workouts seriously over spring break.”
