Lampasas opportunistic in win over Marble Falls baseball

The Marble Falls High School baseball team lost to Lampasas 8-6 March 28 in the second of a three-game series.

Both teams have each one a game and will meet at 7 p.m. Friday, March 31, at Scearce Field on the Marble Falls High School campus to decide the series winner.

In this rematch, the Badgers won a District 24-4A contest for the second time this season, while the Mustangs (4-2) lost in district play for the second time.

“It’s big,” Marble Falls head coach Tyler Porter said of the third game. “The thing is we play them immediately again. It’s our job to answer back and win this series.”

He noted the Lampasas scored only two earned runs in the second game.

“We made untimely errors for sure,” he said, “errors we haven’t made.”

The Mustangs took a 2-1 lead after the first inning and got the run back in the second for a 3-1 advantage.

However, Lampasas plated two runs in the second to tie the contest at 3-3 and outscored Marble Falls in the fifth inning for a 6-1 lead.

“We had two errors in the fifth,” Porter said, adding the runs in the second also came from errors.

Both squads scored two runs in the sixth inning.

Bryce Atkinson led the Mustangs with 2 RBIs off 2 hits, while Davis Dreisbach added an RBI. Jake Carter had two hits.

“We hit the ball hard and did some good things,” Porter said. “We left 11 (baserunners). Some of those were balls that were well hit.”

He used the example of a double play that started with a line drive to the third baseman for the out who threw immediately for the second out.

“We hit the ball hard,” the coach said. “That’s how baseball goes. You can’t be mad. You’re just not getting the results you want.”

Lampasas left-handed pitcher Jonas Andersen struck out 10 in 5 2/3 innings. Atkinson was the Mustangs starting pitcher, striking out five in five innings of work. A.J. Scovil took over.

“(Andersen) is really good,” Porter said. “When Bryce came out, it was 6-6. A.J. gave up two hits. We had errors.”
