The Faith Academy of Marble Falls girls basketball team lost to Austin St. Dominic Savio 65-30 Nov. 17.

“It was very well needed,” Lady Flames head coach Kat Canada said. “We needed that type of competition to see where we lack. Savio is very well put together, very well coached. They know what to do. They’ve been repping their things throughout summer and fall leagues.”

Where Savio was especially dangerous was on the perimeter where each player seemed to be able to connect from jumpers, no matter the distance. They were especially hot from behind the 3-point arc, Canada said.

“I knew what Savio brought,” Canada said.

It also didn’t help that a Faith starter was injured during the contest and couldn’t return. That put more on the others. Canada said she was pleased to see the players respond positively, especially sophomore post Natalie Weems.

“We had other people pick it up, especially Natalie,” she said. “Natalie gave great effort.”

The biggest takeaway for Canada was the difference in communication. She witnessed Savio coaches tell their players where to rotate and where to go with the ball for the open shot.

“They busted a lot of 3s on us,” she said. “And they listened. ‘This is open.’ They were going to the open spot. Even their taller girls were hitting short jumpers on the baseline. They’re pretty quick on their offense. Their offense is fast moving.”

While the outcome wasn’t what the Lady Flames wanted, Canada said she feels fortunate to discover more about her team as they continue preparations for the District 3-3A campaign of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools.

“If there’s something we need to work on before district, we had to know,” she said. “It gave me different things we need to work on at practice. We’re still keeping the positive attitudes. We’re OK with the lessons that come. We have nine girls who are learning their jobs and doing them well.”

The Lady Flames are traveling to Austin Hill Country for a doubleheader Tuesday, Nov. 21. The junior varsity plays at 4:30 p.m. with the girls varsity following at 6 p.m. and the boys varsity taking the court around 7 p.m.
