The Burnet High School girls basketball team went into the Christmas break on a five-game winning streak capped by a 64-23 victory against Brady Dec. 19.

In all, the Lady Dawgs (17-5) have won 15 of their last 16 contests.

“You never know going into a season how things will gel and come together,” head coach Rick Gates said. “I feel like the girls understand what it takes to go win every night. They’re doing their part. We’re in a good place right now. We’re hoping we can continue it and stay healthy.”

The best part about the lopsided win against Brady is that Gates was able to substitute freely and ensured that every Lady Dawg contributed.

“Everyone got a lot of playing time,” he said. “I was really pleased with how we continue to play well. There were things we wanted to work on and play well.”

One cornerstone of the program is the athletes continue to want to play to its standard, the coach said, pointing out it was established by Lady Dawgs of the past. Now this year’s roster is entrusted to keep it going and etch their legacy into the history.

“You learn from previous classes,” he said. “It builds in itself a little bit. The culture is a high standard. They understand regardless of how well we play they create that. Better older players pass that to the young ones. It’s a good thing for us and our program. The girls love to win. They plan to do a lot more around here.”

Burnet will play in the Leander Glenn Tournament Thursday and Friday, Dec. 28-29. The Lady Dawgs face the host at 9 a.m. and Copperas Cove at noon, both on Thursday, and Leander Vandegrift at 10:30 a.m. Friday to finish pool play. Their pool record determines who and what time they play their final game.

“There are some good schools playing there,” Gates said. “It’ll be a good tune-up for us and get them focused.”
