Several individual performances highlighted the Mustang Relays hosted by the Marble Falls High School track and field program Feb. 27.
“Overall I was really impressed with the poise of our athletes,” Mustangs head coach Austin Silva said. “It was the first meet of the season and we were the host, which meant our coaches were working more than they were coaching. Our kids didn’t blink. they got to where they needed to be and competed.”
Top of the list are the distance and hurdle races for the Mustangs and Lady Mustang sophomore Madison Cuplin’s finishes in the long jump and the sprints.
The early talk of the meet was because of the finishes in the boys 3,200 meters where Burnet senior Victor Aviles took gold in 9 minutes and 53.95 seconds, while Marble Falls senior Tyler Hamblin was second in 9:56.44.
Aviles, who won the 2023 Class 4A state title in the 800 meters, also won gold in that race in 2:01.66 and in the 1,600 meters in 4:30.07. Hamblin took silver in the 1,600 meters in 4:34.15.
“When Burnet and Marble Falls are at the same meet, the distance races will never disappoint,” Silva said. “Tyler took second, but I know he will be looking for and working towards gold moving forward. Tyler and Victor have a great relationship, and it’s always exciting watching them share the track together.”
Marble Falls freshman Graham Goggans was second in the 800 meters in 2:02.92 to set a new personal best.
“Very impressed with Goggans’ performance in the 800,” Silva said. “For a freshman to stay with one of the best distance runners in the state, that’s pretty special. We are excited to see him progress this year.”
Marble Falls sophomore Anthony Griffin earned double bronze in the hurdles. He finished the 110-meter hurdles in 17.22 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 43.94 seconds.
“Griffin arguably had the performance of the night,” the coach said. “For a sophomore to have success in such a technical event like the hurdles in the season opener is exciting.”
Cuplin won gold in the long jump thanks to a leap of 18 feet and 7.25 inches on her only attempt in the event to set a new personal record. She followed that with silver in the 200 meters in 25.84 seconds and with the 400-meter relay team. She was the anchor of the 1,600-meter relay team that finished fifth, a first attempt at that position.
“A fantastic start for her,” Lady Mustangs head coach Brenda Gonzalez said. “It was her first time running the open 200 since seventh grade, and she performed well. (She) delivered an incredible comeback as the anchor in the (400-meter relay).”
Senior Kylie Roberts earned the silver medal in the shot put with a heave of 32-2.5.
“She hasn’t had much training yet, as she just wrapped up basketball in early February and is balancing both softball and track,” Gonzalez said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what she can accomplish as she sharpens her technique in her final high school season.”
Gonzalez summed up another neat part of the meet for both programs.
“It was also great to see so many multi-sport athletes competing,” she said.” We had a strong showing of support from the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, who came out to cheer on their teammates in track, along with their coaches. Moments like that really highlight the sense of community and support among our athletes. We also have some new athletes on the girls’ side, which is exciting as we continue to grow the program. This meet served as a benchmark, and I’m excited to make adjustments based on what I saw and continue improving for the next competition. Overall, I’m proud of the performances across the board for both the boys and girls.”
