Several Burnet High School track and field athletes performed at a high level during the District 24-4A meet April 8-9.

No event highlighted how competitive the boys divisions were more than the triple jump with Burnet junior Colt McGraw coming in with the district’s best jump. He was the leader for most of the event until the sixth jump when another athlete had a mark of 41 feet and 2.5 inches.

“It was a great competition,” head coach Jordan Heusinkveld said. “Colt came in as the leader in the district and ended up with his last jump being his best jump (42-4). He trusted (horizontal jumping) coach (Ben) Speer to get his steps right and made it happen.”

Meanwhile, teammate Fisher Powell, a sophomore, obtained bronze with a leap of 40-8.5.

“Fisher did a great job competing and hitting a (personal record) as well,” Heusinkveld said.

McGraw also advanced to the District 23 and 24-4A area meet in the long jump with leap of 20-1.75, good enough for fourth place.

“Colt has been a great addition to the team this year,” Heusinkveld said. “He was a five-event kid all year for us. He runs on the area qualifier (400-meter relay) as well. He has a great work ethic.”

Senior Nathan Torres took bronze in the shot put with a heave of 40-2.5, which made his coach proud.

“He has been consistently scoring us points all year in the throws,” Heusinkveld said. “He showed up and performed when it mattered. He is excited to make it back to area again and have a shot at making regionals.”

Sophomore Caden Farmer ran to silver in the 100 meters, clocking 11.22 seconds.

“He came in with the third best time after the prelims and was able to put it all together to edge out the kid from Taylor (freshman Jeremiah Caldwell),” the coach said. “He was not scared and ran his best race of the year so far.”

The 1,600-meter relay is joining the 400-meter relay at the area meet.

The 400-meter relay team of McGraw, Cohen Jorpeland, Farmer and Clay Lamb finished in 42.25 seconds to take gold.

“I’m incredibly proud,” Heusinkveld said. “They (set a new personal record) for the season by almost a full second. They are inching closer and closer to breaking the school record at 41.80 (seconds). I expect to see them on the track at regionals in Bullard where they will run against some of the best in the state.”

The 1,600-meter relay team of Jorpeland, Hector Vega, Russell Ramirez and Lamb obtained silver in 3:27.98. Heusinkveld noted some runners have been battling injuries.

“It wasn’t their best time of the year, but Russell and Hector had a tough job,” he said. “Those two ran in the open 400 finals and because of the weather (that delayed the meet by more than an hour), they had a shorter recovery than what was expected.”

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the varsity team standings and in the junior varsity team standings.

The Lady Dawgs took third in the varsity team division and won the junior varsity division to be the district champions.

“We finished the regular season strong and are peaking at the right time,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “This is a very young team, and we are incredibly excited about the future of Lady Dawg track and field.”

Freshman Landry Schubert got her varsity team going by breaking the school record in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet and 6.5 inches to take the bronze medal.

Lacie Lewis also earned a bronze medal in the pole vault by clearing 8-6.

“She does such a great job balancing softball and her love for pole vault,” Shipley said.

Senior Asah Roy took bronze in the 1,600 meters by finishing in 5:29.92

“Asah Roy overcame a hard fall at the beginning of the 800-meter race, preventing her (from) finish(ing) a race that she was expecting to advance in,” Shipley said. “After some time with our awesome trainers, they got her ready to compete in the mile where she earned her ticket to area for the fourth time. She has qualified all four years in this race. We are so proud of her grit and determination to overcome that fall.”

Senior Wrigley Mulhollan won double silver in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles in 16.31 and 48.56 seconds, respectively.

“She, too, has advanced every year in high school,” the coach said. “Her commitment to these tough races is incredible. We are so proud.”

All three relays earned bronze medals to advance to the area meet, too.

The 400-meter relay team of Alaina Brown, Cheyenne Adams, Hayden McCombs and Molly Cupitt clocked 50.50 seconds. The 800-meter relay team of Brown, Cupitt, Brooklynn Dawes and Brianne Smith finished in 1:47.69, only six-tenths of a second away from the school record. The 1,600-meter relay team of Dawes, Smith, Izabelle Thompson and Journey Denton crossed the finish line in 4:12.11.

“(We’re) looking to break 50 seconds next week,” Shipley said of the spring relay. “I am thankful for our other senior, Journey Denton, stepping up for the fourth time to complete the (1,600) relay. Journey has been stepping up in a big way to complete this team. She commits to this track team every year while balancing softball. We are so proud of her commitment to both.”

The area meet is Wednesday, April 15, at Lorena High School.
