The Burnet High School boys track and field team competed with plenty of Bulldog fight during the District 23 and 24-4A area meet April 15.
Junior Colt McGraw advanced to the Class 4A Region III meet with a mark of 41 feet and 9.5 inches to nab fourth place in the triple jump after finishing seventh in the long jump with a leap of 19-2.5.
“I’m extremely proud of Colt’s grit and determination,” boys head coach Jordan Heusinkveld said. “He did a phenomenal job going out and competing. There is a lot of wear and tear that happens when you long jump, triple jump and run on the relays. The next two weeks will be great for him to get some rest and be at full strength for regionals.”
The 400-meter relay team of McGraw, senior Cohen Jorpeland, sophomore Caden Farmer and senior Clay Lamb ran to silver in 42.35 seconds. Alternates include junior Lyndon Harycki and senior Matthew Williams.
“The sprint relay did exactly what they needed to do,” Heusinkveld said. “Those kids have really bought into the process and what we are trying to do. We had a poor exchange that prevented us from a potential first-place finish, but we have two weeks to get that ironed out and try to go break the school record.”
The season ended for Farmer in the 100 meters, senior thrower Nathan Torres, sophomore triple jumper Fisher Powell and the 1,600-meter relay team.
Heusinkveld said that Farmer’s performance, where he clocked 11.09 seconds to finish sixth, says plenty about him.
“Caden went out and ran a personal best and pushed closer to breaking into the 10 second range as a sophomore,” he said. “He will continue to be a vital part of our regional (400-meter relay team), and we are excited about his future.”
Torres was sixth in the shot put with a heave of 40 feet and 4 inches.
“I’m proud of Nathan for getting this far,” the coach said. “He did a great job of preparing and giving himself a chance to make regionals.”
Powell was seventh with a mark of 40-0.
“Fisher came out and made it to area as a sophomore,” Heusinkveld said. “That’s extremely impressive. The way he has managed running track, participating in field events, and playing baseball is a testament to who he is as a young man.”
Simply the 1,600-meter relay team “did not have its best day,” the coach said.
“It happens,” Heusinkveld said. “They battled against an extremely tough group of teams though.”
The Class 4A Region III meet is May 1-2 at Bullard High School.
