Marble Falls High School boys soccer players William Guzman and Jett Marcum were named to the 2025-26 Class 4A Super Elite team of the Texas High School Coaches Association.
The Super Elite team has a total of 17 players from across state. It honors exemplary varsity student-athletes across various sports who exhibit good moral character and exceptional athletic talent in their respective classifications, according to reports.
Marcum was the Mustangs’ starting goalie. Offensively when the team needed a goal, Guzman typically delivered.
“I honestly had no idea what it was until I started looking into it but it seems like coaches’ decisions of the elite players of 4A,” Marcum said.
Indeed. A total of 17 players are chosen that include five superlative awards.
“Will Guzman and I are the only ones from our region (IV),” Marcum said. “The other ones are from other regions, and they were basically ranked top 10 in 4A throughout the whole entire year.”
He noted the sport isn’t for the faint of heart.
“I believe soccer is one of the hardest sports in the world, and so I just think if you’re able to have that foot-eye coordination, you’re a pretty good athlete,” the goalie said.
The awards come on the heels of the most successful season in boys soccer in school history. The Mustangs (18-4-5, 10-1-1) captured the District 26-4A championship in back-to-back years and won four playoff matches in 2026 including the Class 4A Division I Region IV title to advance to the state tournament for the first time.
To get to the state tournament, the Mustangs had to get past district rival San Antonio Davenport. They won 2-1 in the playoffs after beating the Wolves 5-2 March 3 and tying them 1-1 Feb. 6.
Marcum and company allowed a total of three goals in the four postseason victories. By contrast the Mustangs scored 15 goals.
“I just think it was a great year,” Marcum said. “It shows a lot to the younger kids that we’re a great team and that we’re a great club to join and that it shows that we can invite people to our club to join something great,” the goalie said. “In the past years, we haven’t had a lot of fans go to our games, especially because of the wintertime, and it’s cold. But throughout those playoffs, seeing so many people there – it’s like lighting a fire.”
Though the Mustangs lost around 15 players to graduation, the junior varsity also won the district crown in 2026.
“We have a lot of underclassmen who have to step up,” Marcum said. “So hopefully we can keep a good mindset throughout the year and fight through. The difference between JV and varsity, there is kind of a gap between there, but it’s also just because there’s no chemistry between us, really, so we have to work on that, work on staying with the team being active during summer break and hopefully build a chemistry for the team. Some of us are in club, some of us go to city hall in Granite Shoals, or there’s a 7 on 7 league in July.”
That league will be on Thursdays in Burnet.
