Burnet volleyballs win bronze title at Glen Rose tourney

The Burnet High School volleyball team took the bronze championship of the Glen Rose Tournament Aug. 20-22.
The Lady Dawgs (10-10) defeated Midland Christian 25-19, 23-25, 25-23 in the final to end the tournament with a four-match winning streak.
They also beat Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch 25-10, 25-21, Denton High 15-25, 25-22, 25-16 all on Aug. 22, Monahans 25-13, 25-15 Aug. 21, and Tolar 19-25, 25-16, 25-22 on Aug. 20.
Losses were to Arlington Pantego Christian 11-25, 21-25 Aug. 21, Liberty Hill 14-25, 20-25, Lubbock Liberty in straight sets, and Andrews 13-25, 14-25.
“It was a great weekend of competing, getting better and continuing to find the chemistry we have been working so hard to build,” head coach Crystal Shipley said. “We are incredibly proud of this crew and the hours they continue to put in to get better every single day.”
The tournament came on heels of the loss to Copperas Cove 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 17-25, 13-15 Aug. 18. In many ways the two Lady Dawg teams mirrored each other. Both have powerful hitters, smart setters and defenders who forced offenses to hit winners for points.
Burnet’s rotation of its power attackers — seniors Brianne Hudgins and Peyton McCabe, junior Brooklynn Dawes and sophomores Landry Schubert and Taylor Smith — means sophomore setter Marisa Porter had her pick of teammates who can make a play when the Lady Dawgs need it. Because the defensive specialists are passing to target with precision, the Lady Dawgs are showing a balance of speed and accuracy with their sets and their work at the net. The result is that defenses are on their heels and must make their own plays to stay in the point.
The match was moved to The Doghouse unexpectedly since Copperas Cove was unable to host because of a water issue.
“It was so exciting to see such a large home crowd on such short notice,” Shipley said. “Our junior varsity 2 (freshman team) battled hard but fell in two close sets to Copperas Cove. Our JV White won a three-set thriller, and we are so proud of their strong finish. The Varsity Lady Dawgs also battled in an exciting five-set match but came up just short.
Burnet welcomes Johnson City Tuesday, Aug. 25, with the subvarsities playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6 p.m. and at Troy Friday, Sept. 4, with the varsity taking the court at 4:30 p.m. and the subvarsities at 5:30 p.m. The subvarsities will compete in the Little River Academy Tournament Thursday, Sept. 3, and Saturday, Sept. 5.
