The Faith Academy of Marble Falls football team will welcome Leander Founders Classical Academy at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, in a non-district contest.
The Flames, who are ranked No. 6 on the SixManFootball.com’s Division II poll of Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools members, are taking on an opponent that beat Fredericksburg Heritage 74-48 last week. Heritage handed the Flames (5-1) their only loss of the season 54-46 Sept. 12.
Founders (6-0) is led by senior running back Connor Stephens, who has 67 rushes for 814 yards and 18 touchdowns and has three receptions for 104 yards and a score.
“They like to run sweeps with him, and then weak side runs, so they attack you from both sides,” Flames head coach Jay Silvers said. “Where the strong side is and think ‘all right, we got that side,’ but he’ll cut it back and go the other way on the weak side. So they do a pretty good job of mixing it up. It just means our guys have to stay balanced and get after it.”
Silvers said his counterparts who have coached against Stephens have high praise for hem.
“That’s one of the best running backs he’s ever coached against,” he said. “That says something.”
Other Archers include senior quarterback Beck Sherwood, a two-year letterman, who has completed 1,28 of 250 passes for 2,299 yards, 46 touchdowns and six interceptions and 67 rushes for 448 yards and 11 scores. He has yet to throw an interception this season. Senior Luke Lewis, a two-year letterman, has 21 rushes for 187 yards and five touchdowns and has 20 catches for 268 yards and 10 scores. Junior center Blaise Tavarez, a two-year letterman, has 18 receptions for 279 yards and five scores, and senior receiver Andrew Kreitzer has five catches for 170 yards and four touchdowns.
Faith will counter with juniors Wade Dillard and Price Rosamond and sophomores Ronin Burns, Madden Kinnee and Nick Zarob.
The Archers defense is led by Lewis, who has 139 tackles, six interceptions, six fumble recoveries and two pass deflections, junior Abel Lewis, who has 72 tackles, four interceptions and three pass deflections, and junior Caleb Carter, who has 43 tackles and three fumble recoveries.
“They tackle well, they move well, and so we’re just going to have to shore up everything,” Silvers said. “Just keep grinding at them.”
The Flames will counter with senior Andrew Houy, who has thrown for more than 360 yards and nine touchdowns and has rushed for 460 yards and 15 scores, sophomore Landon Silvers, who has 617 rushing yards and nine scores and has thrown for more than 150 yards and three touchdowns and has 155 receiving yards and four scores, and Dillard.
“Our guys are playing really well together,” the coach said. “And so hopefully we just keep moving in the right direction here.”
