Burnet girls soccer beats Chaperall

The Burnet High School girls soccer team defeated Killeen Chaperall 2-1 in the first scrimmage of the season Dec. 12.

The Lady Dawgs led 2-0 behind the scoring of senior Brook Oliva with an assist from senior Yessi Flores and Olivia assisted senior Bella Medina with the other goal.

Chaparall scored on a free kick.

“I thought we played OK,” said first year coach Doug Ketcham. “I felt like we were pretty resilient. The girls played pretty hard through most of the game, and then just getting the win I think’s pretty big. It was a school that probably has 1,300 more kids than we do so. I felt like we played well enough to win.”

Other Lady Dawgs include seniors Erica Flores, Taylor Petty and Hallie Poe; juniors Maylin Bocanegra, Vanessa Chavez, Savannah Griffin, Perla Rodriguez and Kaylie Solorzano; sophomores Cheyenne Adams, Genesis Avila, Lilly Barnard, Avery Barth, Kayleigh Briggs, Marigny Griffin, Valeria Lemus; and freshmen Brooklyn Flores and Emma Warden.

Ketcham sees this scrimmage and the one against Lampasas as opportunities to continue to fine-tune and get better for what’s coming.

“They’re really coachable, so that makes it easy to put in what I’m trying to do, and they’re they’re getting it,” the coach said. “It’s first game for me and first game for them for us together. So I think now we have a good understanding about what we need to do.”

He noted that if fans asked the players what they thought, he believes they’d say the same thing.

“It wasn’t their best game, but we scored enough to win,” he said.

The Lady Dawgs will finish scrimmage season against San Angelo Lakeview Friday, Dec. 19, with the junior varsity playing at 6 p.m. and the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
