The Burnet High School girls soccer team went 1-2 at the Lady Texans Showcase hosted by Wimberley High School Jan. 15-17.

The lone win came against Ann Richards 2-1 Jan. 16. The first goal was scored by Erica Flores.

The go-ahead goal was scored by freshman Erica Montoya with under 10 seconds remaining in the contest. By the time the goalie retrieved the ball, the horn sounded to end the match.

“They couldn’t get the kick off quick enough to restart,” head coach Doug Ketcham said. “She hit a long shot. It bounced over in front of the keeper, over her head and went in. The wind was going, and we had the wind. We got fortunate and won the toss. That was the day the front came through. We had the wind in the first half from the south and then it swung around, and we had the wind in the second half. I think that played a big role in her being able to hit that ball and put it in.”

The goal was from 35 yards out.

“She has pretty strong legs,” the coach said. “I don’t know if somebody told her that we’re running out of time, but I want to say she picked it up with about 13 seconds and then made a move and hit it in. So it worked out perfectly, bounced in front and went over.”

Ketcham said he moved Montoya up from the junior varsity because some varsity members aren’t able to play because of injuries. Currently the varsity has 14 athletes.

“Erica stands out on the junior varsity level,” he said. “We needed somebody. She has good size and physicality. The varsity level doesn’t seem to bother her. So I was down with bringing her up.”

The losses were to Lorena 2-0 Jan. 15 and Wimberley 8-0 Jan. 17.

“I felt like we played OK given the numbers that we had,” Ketcham said. “Wimberley was good and we didn’t play well. I think if we had had everybody, we could play with (Lorena). And honestly, if we have all of our people — everybody — then we can play with just about anybody in this state.”

The Lady Dawgs begin District 25-4A play on the road at Georgetown Gateway in a varsity only match at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 before welcoming Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch Friday, Jan. 23, with the junior varsity playing at 5 p.m. and the varsity at 6:30 p.m.
