The Burnet High School girls soccer team defeated Jarrell 3-2 Feb. 27 and Austin Travis 1-0 Feb. 24 in District 25-4A play.
The Lady Dawgs (16-5, 10-1) trailed Jarrell 1-0 at the half.
Then Avery Barth scored the first of her two goals when she split the defenders and outran them to go one on one with the goalie seven minutes into the second half. Her second goal came five minutes later when she got the pass near midfield and out dribbled and outran everyone to the goal where she tapped in the ball.
The Lady Cougars got the equalizer with 10 minutes left in the match.
Then Valerie Lemus took the pass at about the five-yard line, turned and put the ball in the back of the net with about seven minutes remaining.
“It was back and forth,” head coach Doug Ketcham said. “We didn’t have a very good first half. We’re missing so many people, Jarrell is a good team, and it kind of caught up with us. In district we hadn’t given up a goal in thee weeks. So giving that goal up I want to say kind of woke us up.”
Camille Hart was the offensive hero against Travis. She intercepted a pass and put her foot on the ball to send it to back of the net about 25 yards out with 6:53 remaining in the first half.
“Put it right over the goalkeeper’s head,” Ketcham said.
The keeper jumped up to try to knock the ball away but couldn’t reach it.
The coach pointed out his team took only 12 shots during the contest, so practice the next day revolved around shooting drills.
“We possessed really well, but we just didn’t shoot enough,” he said. “(Travis) was getting back, but we were passing up shots, just taking an extra touch when we didn’t need to. We were able to take the ball into the attacking third; we just didn’t do a whole lot with it when we got there.”
Three district games remain beginning with the home match against Austin Northeast at 6:30 pm. Tuesday, March 3. Before that, the Burnet junior varsity welcomes Brownwood at 4:30 p.m.
Then the Lady Dawgs travel to play at Navarro in non-district matches Friday, March 6, and return to district play with a road trip to Austin LBJ Tuesday, March 10. The junior varsities play at 5:30 p.m. and the varsities at 7 p.m. on both nights.
