The Burnet High School girls golf team captured the 2026 District 24-4A championship April 1-2 in dominant fashion.
The Lady Dawgs scored a 334-344–678. Lampasas finished second with a 358-346–704.
Head coach Carter Carruthers said the key to victory were two traits.
“Just keeping level heads and playing consistent golf,” he said. “We have a good golf team. We have four girls who are good golfers, and they don’t try and get outside of themselves. They’re mature in how they play. When you do that, you’re going to have chances in a lot of tournaments.”
The Lady Dawgs were led by freshman Chloe Shannon, who shot a 75-77–152 to finish as the second medalist in the individual standings.
“I try to focus on my shot, not on what my score might be,” she said. “And I try to keep up a positive attitude. I just try to block out all the negative. If I mess up, I try not to get too mad and just regroup and just think about what I need to do better in the next shot.”
Senior Cambria Neenan scored an 82-81–163 to be the third medalist, senior Avery Gowin scored a 76-88–164 for fifth overall and senior Kristine Rodriguez finished with a 101-98–199 for 15th overall.
“Our girls putt well,” Carruthers said. “Obviously it would be great if we could do that even a little bit better, but we putt it well. And then just keep them all in play. They give themselves good lines most of the time. A good line helps you approach the green. And then they get up there, and they make putts. They don’t really hurt themselves.”
The boys golf team was shot a 362-350–712 to finish fourth in the team standings. The Bulldogs were paced by sophomore Dylan Courtney, who scored an 89-84–173 and junior Hays Bennett, who shot an 86-87–173 to finish tied for 12th overall. Senior Shane Ikonen scored a 91-93–184 for 20th overall and sophomore Jude Jenkins finished with a 105-86–191 for 25th overall.
“They’re a very charismatic bunch,” Carruthers said. “It’s fun to be around that. They like each other a lot and have really good team chemistry.”
The Class 4A Region III girls tournament is Wednesday and Thursday, April 15-16, at Bearkat Golf Course in Huntsville.
