Marble Falls strength and conditioning draws a good number of athletes on first day

The Marble Falls Independent School District athletics department began its summer strength-and-program June 13, and coaches were content with the number of athletes who showed up for the voluntary sessions. Fifty-five high school boys and 40 seventh- and eighth-graders worked out. The Lady Mustangs had about 38 representing grades 7-12. The program for all athletes is under the direction of strength-and-conditioning coach Richard Scales. Burnet coaches see big increase in attendance for voluntary workouts

The number of Bulldogs attending voluntary strength-and-conditioning sessions thrills the Burnet High School coaching staff. That’s according to defensive coordinator Ben Speer. Burnet is averaging triple-digit attendance by athletes in grades 7-12, about 50 percent increase from summer 2021. The seven-week summer strength-and-conditioning sessions began June 6. “We can’t be disappointed with that,” Speer said. “Last summer we had 60 guys, and we thought that was good.” Several factors have contribute to the increase of attendees, he said. State qualifying tourneys reveal more positives for Llano

The Llano varsity 7-on-7 football team posted a 1-2 record at the Taylor State Qualifying Tournament June 11, and head coach Matt Green noticed some common traits from the three qualifying tournaments. Llano participated at the Burnet State Qualifying Tournament May 28 and the Jourdanton State Qualifying Tournament June 4. The Jackets were never in the same pool as the hosts and were placed in pools against eight Class 4A members and one Class 3A member. Marble Falls soccer hosts weekly 7-on-7 matches on Tuesdays

Another sport is enjoying the benefits of 7-on-7, and soccer fans don’t have to travel far to witness it. Each Tuesday at 5 p.m. throughout the month of June, area high school players are stopping at Mustang Stadium, 2101 Mustang Drive in Marble Falls, for a night of co-ed soccer where each team must have four girls on the field at all times. Burnet improves existing athletics facilities for more space, to conserve valuable resources

While much of the talk regarding athletics facilities revolves around the construction of the new activity center projected to open in February 2023, Burnet Consolidated Independent School District officials aren’t ignoring existing facilities. They include replacing scoreboards and natural grass and adding track lanes. It’s difficult to miss where these upgrades are happening when fans are at Bulldog Field. At Bulldog Diamonds, the baseball and softball fields are receiving artificial turf and new scoreboards. Originally both facilities had natural grass when they opened in 2008. Llano will play at the Taylor 7-on-7 state qualifying tourney

The Llano 7-on-7 football team has one more opportunity Saturday, June 11, to qualify for the state tournament, But the Yellow Jackets will have to win their pool and a semifinal game of the Taylor State Qualifying Tournament to do. It won’t be easy as Llano faces Comal Davenport, Lampasas and Taylor No. 2 in pool play. Since it’s a 16-team tournament, the pool winners will play in semifinal contests.
