Burnet cross country finishes in top 3 at Cedar Park Invitational
The Burnet High School cross country program competed at the Cedar Park Invitational Sept. 6 where the Bulldogs and Lady Dawgs posted top three finishes in the varsity divisions.
The Bulldogs won the meet with a cumulative time of 1 hour and 28.30.9 seconds and an average time of 17:42.2 per runner, while the Lady Dawgs were third overall with a cumulative time of 1:11.46.2 and an average time of 14:27.9 per runner. The girls varsity division had 11 teams and the boys varsity division had 13 squads.
“Our girls can and our guys can just do really hard things and do them well,” head coach Simon Hairston said.
Clark Yanez paced the Bulldogs thanks to finishing second in the individual standings of the 5K course in 16:47.3. Adan Carreon was fifth overall in 17:16.4, Isaac Vega came in sixth in 17:20.5, Christopher Hernandez was 14th in 18:30.3, and Jose Flores finished 19th in 18:36.3. Other runners include Austin Moore, who was 21st in 18:39.1, Russell Ramirez came in 32nd in 19:25.2, and Andrew Resendez clocked 20:14.9
“We’ve got a base in our conditioning and our men this season where we have everybody back in really good shape, and we’re going to continue to get faster and better,” Hairston said. “Our guys are making great runs, and that goes back to some of the training.”
Asah Roy led the Lady Dawgs thanks to taking silver in 12:35.2 in the girls two-mile race. Abby Bennight came in 17th in 14:37, Josie McDavid was 25th in 14:45.9, Kamila Palacios was 32nd in 14:52.9, and Brekyn Langley finished 34th in 14:55. Other runners are Erica Flores, who was 37th in 14:57.9 and Brooklyn Flores, who was 49th in 15:33.6.
“I feel like those girls went out and did extremely well,” the coach said. “I feel our our girls showcase some solid continuity in their performances. For so many of our girls, we just have some good talent. They work really, really hard with their work ethic and mentality.”
Roy has competed in three two-mile races so far this season and hasn’t finished worse than third in the individual standings.
“Our goal, as I’ve said before, is to keep her healthy and keep her well,” Hairston said. “I do think ‘elite’ is a term that I think is relative; (does she) have the ability, skill and talent to be one of the top runners in our district and also in the state? Yeah. She just goes out and works really, really hard. She has God-given talent that she continues to work on, and I feel like she has a wonderful upside to her.”
The Bulldogs were 14th overall in the boys junior varsity division that had 24 teams and the Lady Dawgs finished 11th overall in the girls junior varsity division that had 17 squads.
Burnet will compete in the Tenroc Invitational hosted by Salado Thursday, Sept. 11.
