The Burnet Consolidated Independent School District football program has announced some important dates in July leading to the start of training camp next month.

Top of the list is the Bulldogs’ football camp July 27-30 tentatively scheduled for 8-10 a.m.

Head coach Ben Speer emphasized the importance of attendance of this camp for his freshmen.

“It’s so vital,” he said.

He listed a number of reasons why. Top of the list is that during this camp, the freshmen are working closely with the head coach, the coordinators and position coaches that make up the varsity staff.

“The coaches start to build a better relationship with them,” Speer said. “You start building a depth chart, you start really seeing where these kids fit. Kids grow four inches and put on 30 pounds. They still need to be in this spot or do we need to push him over here? What position fits the tools that he has?”

Second, they’re exposed to what they’ll be doing during fall training camp, which starts Aug. 3.

“It’s just so important for them to be here and spend that time with their individual coaches,” the coach said. “It gives them confidence going into the (following) week when practices start. It’s like ‘I’m not going to be behind, I’m going to be comfortable to know what we’re doing, what we’re asking.'”

And finally, the freshmen will take the first step into becoming high school players.

“It’s hard to get freshman parents to realize that ‘hey, that’s the start of it all – that camp,” Speer said. “And then it’s mandatory practices. They’ve been used to middle school when football doesn’t start till school starts. Now it’s starting. You need to be here. You want to get yourself ready for Aug. 3 and be ahead of your teammates who aren’t and just get here and be learning.”

The middle school players will review and learn more terminology and will be around their middle school coaches.

Other dates include Meet the Coaches July 29 at Bill’s Burgers and high school players can pick up equipment July 30. A parent meeting for those who have high school players is set for Aug. 4.

Reserved seats for the 2026 season are on sale. Those who are renewing have until July 31 to decide if they want to keep their tickets. Contact the athletic department secretary Kayla Kastner at kk******@********sd.net for more information.
