One Marble Falls High School cross country runner punched her ticket to the Class 4A Region III meet thanks to her finish at the District 24-4A championships Oct. 7 in Lampasas.

She is sophomore Reese Massey, who was eighth overall in the girls varsity division thanks to finishing the two-mile course in 13 minutes and 5.66 seconds.

It’s a return trip to regionals for Massey, whose season ended at the Class 4A state meet in 2024. The regional meet is at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, the Kate Barr Ross Memorial Park in Huntsville.

“She’s worked hard all season to return for a strong sophomore year and has been an incredible influence on our younger runners, setting the tone through her determination and leadership,” assistant coach Kaitlyn Goertz said.

The Lady Mustangs were fifth overall with Salado winning the district crown thanks to having five runners finish in the top eight. Burnet is the runner-up thanks to having five runners finish in the top 19, and Georgetown Gateway was third thanks to having five runners finish in the top 23.

“Varsity girls saw strong finishes at district from freshmen Sapana Kahatri and Kat Mosley and sophomore Savannah Hamblin,” Goertz said. “Freshman Graci Nelson, Hadalye Hernandez and Sonnie Damuth each contributed steady efforts and unwavering commitment throughout the season, helping strengthen our team from start to finish. With such a young roster, our girls showed tremendous growth, and we’re excited to see how they continue to develop in the coming years.”

In the boys varsity race, which was a 5K, the Mustangs finished fourth overall after losing a tiebreaker to Lampasas. The Badgers’ sixth runner finished 24th, while the Mustangs’ sixth runner was 30th.

“They’ve had a strong season and showed steady progress from start to finish,” Goertz said. “While we’re disappointed that we won’t have the opportunity to compete at regionals as a team, we’re very proud of the effort and growth we’ve seen from this group. With such a young team, there’s a lot of potential and excitement for what’s ahead.”

Still, coaches believe the Mustangs will only get better.

“Our boys’ varsity had a great year with consistent contributions across the roster,” Goertz said. “Junior Owen Martin and freshman Jahir Garcia both turned in strong performances throughout the season, while freshman JJ Walker continued to grow and gain valuable experience competing at the varsity level. Sophomore Colton Rutland also showed steady progress and determination all season long. The depth of talent in our boys’ program is exciting, and we’re equally proud of the athletes who represented us on the JV side. This group’s effort and commitment truly set the tone for the future.”

Marble Falls sophomore Graham Goggans was 11th overall in 17:18.58, freshman Joaquim Edwards finished 12th overall. 17:23.15, and junior Owen Martin was 15h overall in 17:39.53.

“Graham and Joaquim will serve as the first and second alternates for regionals,” Goertz said. “Joaquim really rose to the occasion, finishing strong right behind Graham to help lead our boys at district, while Logan continued to be a steady and reliable scorer all season long.”

Salado won the district championship with five Eagles finishing in the top 10. Burnet was second with three top 10 finishers, and Lampasas came in third with five runners finish in the top 20.

In the boys junior varsity division, Marble Falls was fourth. Salado is the district champion followed by Gateway and Burnet.
